Purpose of the Unit

The purpose of this unit is to teach students about the five regions of the
United States. They will learn about the physical and cultural characteristics
of each region as well as the climate and popular attractions in each region.
The standards the unit addresses are Social Studies third-grade standards:
3.3.4, 3.3.5, 3.3.6. Standard 3.3.4 addresses cardinal directions and distances
between places. Standard 3.3.5 addresses the physical and cultural
characteristics of regions with a focus on Indiana. Standard 3.3.6 compares
Indiana to surrounding states using words, illustrations, maps, photographs,
and other resources. This unit will help the students build a foundational
knowledge of United States.
