Observation #1
February 11, 2015
7th Grade Band
Written Lesson Plan
Your lesson plan was organized and there was a logical flow and sequence of events from
the beginning to the end of the lesson.
Instructional Observations
The room is neat and well organized: it is clear to the students that they are going to be
active in the lesson.
The circle set-up for the band has certain advantages and disadvantages. It is
unavoidable for you to have your back turned to some players when you are in the middle
of the circle. Try getting out of the circle and circulating around the room behind them
while they are doing the warm-up and also while you are working on the literature.
The warm-up was appropriate in terms of duration and difficulty level. They had enough
time to really get going with their playing before you moved to Music For A Darkened
Theatre.
Using a hi-hat to set pulse is just fine give the set-up. What are the plans in place for
preparing for a stage performance in which they will have to respond to a conductor?
Your feedback is appropriate and constructive. At times your feedback was a little too
long: work to be more succinct. This will also minimize the opportunity for off-task
behavior. Eliminating the opportunities for off-task behavior will make managing the
class even more easy. The longer the class period went forward, the amount of off-task
behavior increased.
You demonstrated a positive demeanor throughout the lesson: your energy level is
appropriate.
