Lesson 8.

3
Graphing = 2 + +

Section 1
Graph = 2 2 + 7

= 2 + 7
This equation is a quadratic equation, so our graph will
have a U-Shaped graph, called a parabola.
Axis of Symmetry

x-intercepts

Vertex

= 2 + 7
In order to be able to graph, we first must find
the axis of symmetry. The axis of symmetry is
the dividing line that divides the parabola
equally into two symmetric parts.

Axis
of Symmetry

Find the Axis of Symmetry by using the

formula:

= 2.
(Illustration only, Not Actual Graph)

(2) 2
= =1
2(1)
2

The axis of symmetry is = 1.

= 2 + +
= 2 2 + 7
= 1 and = 2.

= 2 + 7
The next step is to find the vertex of the parabola.
This is the minimum or maximum value of the
quadratic equation, depending on the equation.
The vertex is (, ). We already have the value,
which is 1 (Axis of Symmetry). To find the
value, plug in = 1 into the equation = 2
2 + 7.

= 2 2 + 7.
= (1)2 2 1 + 7
=12+7
=6

The value of the vertex is 6. That means the

vertex is (1,6).

Vertex
(Illustration only, Not Actual Graph)

= 2 + 7
The next part we must do is plug in values in order to find more points so that it is possible to
graph. In order to be able to graph decently, we must have at least 3 points. So, we know that
our axis of symmetry is 1, so it is logical to do one x value above, and one x value below that. So
we should plug in = 2, and = 0.

=0

=2

= 2 2 + 7
= (0)2 2 0 + 7
=00+7
=7
(0,7)

= 2 2 + 7
= (2)2 2 2 + 7
=44+7
=7
(2,7)

These two points have the same y values because of the axis of symmetry. Both 0 and 2 are
the same distance (1 unit) from the axis of symmetry ( = 1), so the point will just reflect
over the axis of symmetry, resulting in the same y value.

= 2 2 + 7
Next, we must graph. We
have our three points: (1,6)Vertex, (0,7), and (2,7). Now
all we have to do is just plot
them.

= 2 2 + 7
After that, connect the points
in a U-Shape, and then you
are done!

Section 2
Graph = 3 2 + 3 4

= 3 + 3 4
This equation is also a quadratic equation, but as you can see there
is a negative sign (-) at the beginning of the equation. This means
that the parabola will now be inverted, and will look like this once
graphed:

Axis of Symmetry

x-intercepts

= 3 + 3 4
In order to be able to graph, we first must find
the axis of symmetry. The axis of symmetry is
the dividing line that divides the parabola
equally into two symmetric parts.

Find the Axis of Symmetry by using the

The axis of symmetry is = 2.

= 2 + +
= 3 2 + 3 4
= 3 and = 3

= 3 + 3 4
The next step is to find the vertex of the parabola. This is the minimum or
maximum value of the quadratic equation, depending on the equation. The
1
vertex is (, ). We already have the value, which is 2 (Axis of Symmetry). To

The next part we must do is plug in values in order to find more points so that it is possible to
graph. In order to be able to graph decently, we must have at least 3 points. So, we know that

our axis of symmetry is , so it is logical to do one x value above, and one x value below that. So

(1,-4)

= 3 2 + 3 4
= 3(1)2 + 3 1 4
= 3 + 3 4
= 4
(1,-4)

These two points have the same y values because of the axis of symmetry. Both 0 and 1 are

Next, we must graph. We
have our three points:

is just plot them.

After that, connect the points
in a U-Shape, and then you
are done!

Section 3
The function = 16 2 + 88 + 12 represents the height (in feet) of
a pumpkin seconds after it is launched from a catapult. When does the
pumpkin reach its maximum height? What is the maximum height of
the pumpkin?

The function = 16 2 + 88 + 12 represents the height (in feet)

of a pumpkin seconds after it is launched from a catapult. When does
the pumpkin reach its maximum height? What is the maximum height of
the pumpkin?

The first thing you we must do in order to solve anything, is to

analyze what this problem is asking us. It gives us the formula,
= 16 2 + 88 + 12, and its asking us:

When the pumpkin reaches its maximum height? and

What the actual maximum height is?

The function = 16 2 + 88 + 12 represents the height (in feet)

of a pumpkin seconds after it is launched from a catapult. When does
the pumpkin reach its maximum height? What is the maximum height of
the pumpkin?

The first question we must answer

is

Find the Axis of Symmetry by using the

formula:

= 2.

When will the pumpkin reach its

maximum height?
In order to solve this, we must find
the axis of symmetry.

(88)
2(16)

88
32

= 2.75

The axis of symmetry is 2.75.

= 2 + +
= 16 2 + 88 + 12
= 16 and = 88.

Therefore, the time the pumpkin

reaches its maximum height at
2.75 seconds.

The function = 16 2 + 88 + 12 represents the height (in feet)

of a pumpkin seconds after it is launched from a catapult. When does
the pumpkin reach its maximum height? What is the maximum height of
the pumpkin?
The next question we must answer is

What the actual maximum height is?

In order to solve this, we must find the vertex. To find the vertex, you plug in
the axis of symmetry to the equation and solve for y.
() = 16(2.75)2 + 88 2.75 + 12
() = 121 + 242 + 12
= 133

Therefore, the maximum height of the pumpkin at the vertex is

133 ft.
