Second Semester (141)

Problem Set # 1
Assigned on September 14, 2014

Due on September 21, 2014

Problem 1
For a spur gear having an outside diameter of 75mm, full-depth involute gear teeth with a
module of 1mm and a 20o pressure angle, find the pitch diameter of the gear, the circular pitch,
the addendum, the dedendum, and the number of gear teeth.
Problem # 2

Problem # 3
In the reverted planetary train illustrated, find the speed and direction of rotation of the arm if the
gear 2 is unable to rotate and gear 6 is driven at 12 rpm in clockwise direction.

Problem 4: Spur gear A receives 4 hp

at 600 rpm through its shaft and
rotates clockwise. Gear B is an idler
and gear C is the driven gear. The
teeth are 200 full depth.
a) Draw a free body diagram for
each gear.
b) The load Wt and Wr on each gear.
c) Determine the torque transmitted
by each shaft.
d) The force applied to the idler
shaft.

Problem 5:
As shown in the figure, shaft a rotates at a speed of n2 = 1200
rev/min and provides power of H= 20 kW to helical gear 2.
Helical gears 2 and 3 have a helix angle of 30 degs, a normal
module of 2 mm and a normal pressure angle of 20 degs. Bevel
gears 4 and 5 have a module of 4 mm, a pressure angle of 20
degs, a face width of 50 mm. Helical gear 3 and bevel gear 4 are
mounted on the same shaft which is supported in the middle by
a bearing that can take both radial and thrust loads.
a) Determine the speed (n5) of gear 5 in rpm.
b) Calculate the total thrust and radial forces (Fthrust) and
(Fradial) applied on the bearing shown in the figure.
