Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 1. PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPNMENT AND LEARNING
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in child
development knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens
characteristics and needs, and of multiple interacting influences on childrens
development, and create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and
challenging for each child. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:


During the spring semester of 2003 during my ECED 103-Early Childhood Curriculum
course, we created a Stages of Art Portfolio. I went to a childcare facility and worked
with the teacher and had several different children of all ages color pictures for me. I
went through the pictures and decided which pictures were nonrepresentational/
scribbling for the ages of 2, 3 and 3-4 as well as Emerging Representational for ages 4-5
and Representational for ages 6-8.

Analysis of What I Learned:


During this process I was able to evaluate and look into what the children are capable of
at the different stages of their art work. It is very interesting to see how the childrens
art work changes as they become older. They start out with a scribble and evolve over
time.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC


Standard:
Through this project I am now prepared and able to identify when a child is behind in
his/her developmental stages of art, or fine motor skills. Through art a child not only
works on his/her fine motor skills, but also his/her creativity and non-verbal
communication. I have researched the different stages and can distinguish between a
scribble of a 2 year old to one o f a 4 year old. I would be able to go to a parent if I felt
the child is behind because they are still scribbling at the age of 5. In my classroom
during an art activity I noticed one of my students was having a hard time drawing his
shapes. I gave the child a paper where he could trace his shapes which helped him
complete the activity. I currently have a child who still at the scribbling stage, I
contacted his parents so they were aware and they are looking into it. While he is at
school I have been working with him on his tracing skills and if youre with him one on
one he is able to connect some of his lines.
