IMB Science Observation Reflection

There was plenty of time to be able to observe a science lesson
during my IMB experience because of the fact that this was the only
other major subject that my teacher taught during the school day.
Social Studies is pushed back to after EOGs and so science was taught
first thing every morning after morning work was completed. As I was
observing this lesson, it was easy to figure out that the class and
teacher had a routine that they had been doing since the start of the
year and I believe this is good for the flow of the class and for the flow
of the lesson as well. I think this allows for the students to know what
they should be doing when a certain student is passing out the journals
that they need to be sitting quietly at their desks and then when they
get them they should start on the DO IT NOW warm up on the SMART
Board. I thought that there are some similarities in this observation
compared to what we do in our ELED 3221 class when Dr. Binns does
lessons with us and he has us do some sort of worksheet before he
really starts a lesson. I believe this is a good way to get students
warmed up and get them engaged in the content that is about to be
brought to them. It was interesting to see that the students were
participating in the lesson because this was at 8:15 in the morning so
there were plenty of hands that were raised answering the questions

that the teacher had. One thing that the teacher had a lot of the
students doing in his lesson was collaboration with fellow classmates.
He had them turn to a partner and tell them their opinions a lot of the
time and I think this is a great idea because of the fact that students
can learn off of each other. It was also cool to see how the teacher had
the same way of doing his lesson that we are learning to do in our
lessons. He had examples of activating prior knowledge, teacher input,
guided practice, independent practice, and a closure at the end, which
I think this is good to see. The teacher had problems with some kids
not participating in the lesson because he has a couple of students
that tend to not do much when they come to school and he got upset
with them on this day when one of them wasnt doing anything. The
teacher had a big problem with behavioral problems and classroom
management in this class so he had a ton of distractions in his lessons
as I was there observing.
