Heat Treatment Procedures: Alsi 1040 is avaiable in ether cold drawn or hot rolled condition. The cold finishing
process of 'crawing’ does slighty improve the mechanical properties over those of hot rolled bar. However, thermal
treatments must be employed if higher mechanical properties are required. ASI 1040 is suitable for surface hardening by
‘lame or induction methods. Hardness and tensile strength may also be further increased by conventional quenching and
tempering though the results are somewhat sensitive tothe materials section sie (se tempering diagrams).
Thermal Temperature Remarh
Process: Range:
Annealing '830-860°C Cool slowly in furnace at not more than 65°%y/hr.
Normalsing| 830-860°C Ar cool.
Hardening '830-860°C Holding ime in furnace should be 1Omins/cm of ruling section folowed by ol or
water quenching.
Tempering 200-850° ‘Temperature depends on required hardness (see tempering diagrams).
‘Tempering shouldbe cari out ‘immediately’ after quenching.
The tempering time being at least 1 hour per 25mm of section.
Flame/Induction 870-900°C __+Heatng should be rapid inorder to locals the heating effect to the surface of the
bar
Quench immediately int ol or water.
‘Temper immediately at 150-200°C for maximum surface hardness.
Surface hardness obtainable 56-60 HRC.
