TERM 2 - LEARNING AREA OVERVIEWS

MATHS
Throughout Term 2, students will continue working on mental and written strategies to solve problems
involving all 4 operations. Written strategies will include short division, multiplying by t wo or more digits,
borrowing and carrying. Mental strategies will include chunking, balancing, place value, splitting, doubling
and halving. Term 2 will also see students adding and subtracting fractions with the same and related
denominators, adding and subtracting decimals and using estimation and rounding to check answers.
Students will also learn different ways of converting different units of measurement including length, mass
and capacity. Finally, students will learn the properties of different types of angles including those on a
straight line, those at a point and vertically opposite angles. Resources used will include: VisLearn & Signpost
Mental Maths.
ENGLISH
Like Term 1, Term 2 English will consist of a variety of elements:

- Spelling will continue using the Words Their Way program.


- Guided Reading groups will continue on a weekly basis. (Clarifying, Questioning, Inferring, Summarising,
Predicting will be the focus)

- Whole class Shared Reading will continue on a weekly basis.


- Grammar and punctuation specific lessons will include:
- Commas and apostrophes
- Complex sentence construction (conjunctions, connectors, phrases, clauses)
- Using objective and subjective language
- Using persuasive language including high modality
- Using evaluative language
- Editing and proof reading
- Speaking (Tone, pitch, volume, pace, eye contact, gestures)

GEOGRAPHY
Term 2 will involve students in studying differences in demographic and social characteristics bet ween
countries across the world. They will analyse different sources of data looking for patterns and trends to
make inferences about quality of life in different nations. Relationships in data will include; per capita
income, health, life expectancy and population density.

HISTORY
In Term 2, students will examine different experiences of Australian democracy and citizenship. They will
look at different groups of people who have exercised demographic rights. E.g. Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islanders, Migrants, Women & Children.

RELIGION
Term 2 explores ways in which Jesus revealed heroic, spiritual strength to obey his Father. Students will also consider
ways in which Christian heroes have been strengthened by the gifts of Holy Spirit, and how Catholics are promised this
strengthening through the Sacrament of Confirmation and through the Beatitudes. In the second half of Term 2,
students will study ways in which Jesus showed us how to love in times of emotion. The Bible and its

narratives are key to Christians developing emotional maturity and students will examine the Proverbs and
other Old Testament Stories.

HEALTH
In Term 2, students will work on skills to establish and manage relationships. In particular, they will continue
learning different ways of dealing with bullying and harassment. Furthermore, students will consider the
role of bystanders, family and friends in dealing with bullying.
MEDIA
This subject will be heavily integrated with Health where students create an anti-bullying advertisement
targeted at school aged students. They will learn about pre-production (script writing) production
(capturing, recording and directing) post production (editing and distributing) as well as digital citizenship.
