Mr. Curley M. Dossman, Jr.

President, Georgia- Pacific Foundation
133 Peachtree Street, N.E.
Atlanta, GA 30303
Dear Mr. Dossman,
I am excited to present a proposal to the Georgia-Pacific
Foundation for an education program for Safe Home. With a grant of
$42,000 we will hire 10 trained experts, and 6 assistants to help make
people more aware and educate them about domestic violence.
Domestic violence can happen to both women and men. Safe
Home is a place for those who want to get away from the violence, has
a safe place to go. Having this grant money would help to implement
more education opportunities to become available to anyone and have
seminars more to the public, making it more well known as well as
getting a 5k started. We would want to raise money to go the Safe
Home so they can continue to operate and give them supplies needed
to run the facility.
We would like to start locally and make this a nationwide
education system about domestic violence. It only seems to get vague
attention at times, but we want to make more people aware and to
help save their loved ones from violent situations.
I would like to thank you Mr. Dossman, for your interest in
educating people about Domestic Violence. I will be in contact with you
soon to ensure that you have received this entire proposal and to
clarify any questions you may have for me.
Sincerely,

Lauren Lundberg
Director of SafeHome Education

Executive Summary
Safehome of Overland Park, KS is seeking a $42,000 grant to
improve on Education of Domestic Violence. We want to make more
people aware of signs of the violence and how they can help someone
in need. Safehome has began an education program already, but has
room to improve with a 5k race/walk as well as making other materials
available to have others become more actively aware in the
community and thats what we would like to accomplish with this
grant.
With the economy and the government shutting down for a brief
while, things have been difficult at times to receive money for supplies
for Safe Home. It can be difficult for some to continuously give part of
their hard earned money, but people do make an effort to donate when
they can to Safe Home.
Safe Home of the Kansas City Metro area has been around since
1979, helping many women and children get to a safer place in life.
This is a no cost place for people to go when they need it. Its the only
place in the KC area that has a full time lawyer in house for those to
seek legal advice if they need it. They do take financial donations to
help with the costs of up keep and supplies they need to care for the
women and children. Safe Home has a respectable reputation and has
helped many get back up on their feet and out of their situation from

the committed volunteers they have who help out and those who work
there full time.
The attached pages show the potential of what this could
become with an Education system that functions well and people
utilize it more, and to help make others more aware. Domestic violence
touches everyones life at some point in time whether you realize it or
not. It will help women out and make them realize that its ok to leave
an abusive situation and to stand strong.

Introduction
In 1979 a woman named Martha Hunt took in a neighbor, who is
a school teacher, and her two kids that were severely bruised and
bleeding from being pushed out of a moving car by her abusive
husband. She was afraid for her life. She knew she could trust Martha
who graciously took them in, helped her out. Since there werent any
places at the time in Johnson County to serve domestic violence
victims to go to a safe place, Martha decided to create Safe Home.
Martha organized a community effort to help women out of
abused homes; and that became a popular notion when women started
to find out they had a safe place to go. In 1984, Martha was able to
open a 15-bed facility to accommodate the demand for more space.
Once they started to outgrow that, it became a 29-bed facility in 1987.
In 2006 they grew once again to 45-bed facility. It also includes other

parts for administrative, counseling and a great shelter to go to in

need.
Safe Home needs to become better known and could potentially
get more places located elsewhere besides KC metro area. With the
more Education programs instilled, the more women and children could
be saved sooner from a domestic violence situation.

Problem Statement
Although people think they understand Domestic Violence, there
is currently not enough education going around about domestic
violence and making more people aware of it. With the education
systems that they have already in place, just adding on to it and
implementing in a 5k would be helpful. People love doing 5ks; it helps
people to have them become more involved. They already have a
soccer and football game(s) for charity that Will Shields put together,
but its not well advertised as it could be. They need more
advertisement for the charity games they put on, as well as making
sure the education is offered in more places or displayed else where.
When the 5k is up and running, getting lots of people involved, it
would be good for the health of the community to get them running

and walking. The health of those who are in abusive situations would
improve because they wouldnt have someone beating them up or
ruining their mental health and state of mind that they wouldnt be
safe anywhere, no matter what happens to them. We will also ask the
local police departments to help with the traffic flow when the 5k is
taking place, making sure everyone participating in the 5k is safe when
on the route, and re-direct traffic around the course of the 5k.
This is a great way for the community to get involved, or even
get neighbors involved to help protect one another. I think that if there
were a public figure attached to this, it would help make it better
known and help influence other people to get involved. I think the
education expansion would be great to communities.

Goals/Objectives
Our goal is to educate more people in the community about
domestic violence and how to handle it.

Expand the education opportunities

Offer classes and programs to churches and schools
Start the annual 5k
Report how many attended the 5k
Methods
We want to be able to expand the existing education system that

is in place, make it more useful for people to locate help and not have

to have people go looking for it after they are already in a terrible

situation they may be hesitant about going looking for at the last
minute. We will post ads/information on school websites, send out
emails and advertise locally. As for the 5k, social media will be a huge
part to get that up and running and advertise with posters around
schools and gyms as well.
The 5k would take place in August for the cooler weather and not
have to deal with the heat of the summer. The money from the grant
would help get the first annual 5k up and running, we would only
charge $10 for a t-shirt to help support the cause and put the money
towards more education funding. We would have donations by our
sponsors and make sure to include fliers in the packets with coupons
and or incentives to go to their business. With the help of the local
police department, we would ask if they would donate their time during
the 5k to this cause that they interact with the most. If the police
decide not to volunteer their time, we would set aside some funds to
pay them for their time of service.

Evaluation
In evaluating this project we would gather data over a four
month period to see how many people were interested in free classes
through their place of work or through the school/church they attend or
just gathered info from us in general to see how effective the new

education angle has took with the grant. We would also take the results
from the 5k to see how well that did and would hand out packets in
their bags they get to know how many people would have picked those
up and at least glanced through them. We would learn from that if we
need to step up some more with the education classes and the 5k or
back off anything that wasnt working as well with the education
classes or the 5k as well.

Conclusion
We ask that the Georgia Pacific Foundation provide us with a
grant of $42,000 to those victims of domestic violence of the Kansas
City Metro Area and those who arent victims to help educate them on
how to get help, and get out of a bad situation when they are in one. In
recognition of such support, we would make sure to announce your
participation on our newsletters and education information as well as
having a big sign for the 5k and have information in the 5k packets as
well. To offer the support would bring so many people to a safer place,
and have a safer home.
