The neurotransmitters then diffuse across and bind to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, opening ion channels that depolarize the postsynaptic membrane and may generate an action potential, while the neurotransmitters are broken down by enzymes and their products reabsorbed, with neurotransmitters repackaged into vesicles before the synaptic knob repolarizes.
