GettingStarted

TheBlendedClassroomGrantWritingCommitteeiswritingthisgrantproposaltomeet
theblendedclassroomneedsofaaWaukeeCommunitySchoolDistrictPrairieview
Schoolclassroom.Blendedlearni
ngisaformaleducationprograminwhichastudent
learnsatleastinpartthroughonlinedeliveryofcontentandinstructionwithsome
elementofstudentcontrolovertime,place,pathorpace.Currently,onlystaffis
considered1:1laptopsintheentiredistrict,andPrairieviewSchoolcontainsthree
separatecomputerlabswithapproximately25computerseach.Studentswithinthe
WaukeeCommunitySchoolhavelimiteduseoftechnologyonadailybasis,asmost
classroomscannotreservethecomputerlabseachdayandarenotdesignedtobe
blendedorflipped.

Thepurposeofthisgrantistoactasatrialclassroomandprogramdesignedto
incorporatetheblendedlearningconceptandtheimprovementsonoverallstudent

learning.ThegrantfundingwillbeusedtopurchaseAppleiPads,protectivecases,and
softwarenecessaryforthesubjectandlearningcontent.Theclassroomenvironmentin
whichthisgrantwillbeused,isaTechnologyEducationclassroomwherethereare
currentlythreedifferentcoursesbeingtaughtIntrotoWoodworking,IntrotoDrafting
andDesign,andIntrotoEngineeringDesign(ProjectLeadtheWay).

TheiPadswillbeutilizedinamannerthatwouldallowstudentstohavedailyaccessto
aclassroomLearningManagementSystem(LMS),subjectspecificapplications,digital
collaborationtools,cloudstorageforprojectsandassignments,video/audiorecording,
andresearchcapabilities.Currently,theTechnologyEducationDepartmentmeetswith
approximately40%ofthestudentpopulationwithinthethreedifferentcoursesat
PrairieviewSchool(216/532students).Thisisthelargestelectiveareawithinthe
school,andwillprovidethelargestdatasetofindividualstotesttheeffectivenessofthe
BlendedClassroomGrantProgram.

ThechartbelowhighlightsthemajoractivitiesthattheBlendedClassroomGrant
ProposalwouldmeetintermsoftheneedsofstudentsatPrairieviewintheWaukee
CommunitySchoolDistrict.Themajoractivitiesrevolvearoundthestudentsabilityto
accessthelearningcontentinmultiplemethods,asmuchastheywant,andfrom
anywherethattheyhaveaccesstotechnologyinandoutoftheclassroom.Blended
Learningallowsthestudent
learnsatleastinpartthroughonlinedeliveryofcontentand
instructionwithsomeelementofstudentcontrolovertime,place,pathorpace.The
chartliststhemajoractivities,briefdescriptionsoftheactivity,ifthereisacost
associatedwiththeactivity,andexamplesofAppsandsoftwarethatisavailableforthat
activity.

Therearemanydifferentsourcesoffundingavailableforteachersandadministrators

availablelocally,throughFoundationGrants,opportunitiesatbothregional(AEA)and
Statelevel(STEMGrants).Manyofthesefundingopportunitieshavevarious
restrictions,requirements,reporting,andfundingmatchesattachedtothem.Ourgroup
isgoingtoproposeourBlendedLearningGranttothelocalWaukeeCommunitySchool
DistrictFoundation.Therearenorestrictionsonhowmuchweareallowedtoaskforin
termsoffunding,itisalocalgrantopportunitythatisgoingtodirectlyimprovethe
studentswithinitsowndistrict,andthescoringrubricusedtodeterminelikelihoodof
funding,arecoveredbyalloftherequiredsectionsoftheScholasticGrantProposal.

havebeenaskedasapartofthisproject,toutilizetheScholasticGrantWriting
Approach,whichisastepbystepmethodofwritinggrantseffectively.Writingallofthe
sectionsoftheScholasticGrantApproach,alongwithprovidinglocaldata,andresearch
showinghowBlendedLearningimprovesstudentlearningwillprovideagoodchanceof
receivingfundingwithintheWaukeeDistrict.Itsalsoagreattimetoapplyforthisgrant
asthelastseveralWaukeeBoardMeetingshavefocusedontechnologywithinthe
district,andhowimprovementsneedtobemade.TheWaukeeBoardisactively
lookingforwaysinwhichthedistrictcanimproveitsstandingintechnologyandprovide
morestudentsequalaccesstodifferentmethodsoflearningintheclassroom.

TheBlendedClassroomGrantusingiPadsintheClassroomiscurrentlybeing
supportedbytheWaukeeCommunitySchoolDistrictPrincipal,Mrs.Juley
MurphyTiernan,aswellastheWaukeeDistrictTechnologyCoordinatorMarkToland.
Asstatedpreviously,theWaukeeDistrictisactivelylookingformanydifferentwaysin
whichstudentscanlearninnewanddifferentways,andalsoinbeingabletoimprove
theoverallabilityforstudentstousetechnologycorrectlyandeffectively.

DevelopingtheNeedsStatement

PrairieviewSchoolstudentsdonthavedailyaccesstothecomputerand
teachersarerequiredtoreservecomputerlabsatthebeginningofeachweekfortheir
classrooms.Thestudentsuseislimitedtotwodaysforeachclassroomeveryweek,if
therearenoextendedprojectsforotherclasses.Prairieviewclassroomsarenot
designedforblendedorflippedlearning.Thegoalofwritingthisgrantproposal,isto
implementa1:1learningenvironmentinsideofoneclassroom,toactasatestclassin
BlendedLearningwithinPrairieview.Iftheevaluationcriteriaaremetorexceeded
withinthetimeframe,thiswillprovidevaluabledatainmoreclassroomsmovingtoa
BlendedLearningenvironment.
Studentscurrentaccesstocomputersisverylimitedinsidetheschool,students
havereportedthattheyhaveaworkingknowledgeofusingcomputers,tablets,and
smartphonesoutsidetheclassroom.Thesurveyconductedshowedthat75%of
studentshaveagoodbackgroundofusingtechnologytoaccomplishtheirassignments
athomeandforresearchandprojectcreation.
MostteachersinPrairieviewschoolalsodonthavestudentlaptopsoriPads
(tablets)touseintheirclassrooms.Thisproposalistoprovideeachteacherwithone
iPadinPrairieviewSchooltobeabletoutilizeLMSandtobeabletodevelopcurriculum
andclassroommaterialsusingtechnology.Trainingteacherswillbethefirststepinthis
processofmovingtoblendedlearning.Teachersopinionsurveyshownthatonly25%

arereadytouseiPadseffectivelywithoutmoretraining.
Inthelastparentsadministrationmeetingasurveyconductedbetweenparents
concernsblendedlearningandusingiPadsinPrairieviewschool,55%ofparents
desiredmovingforwardonusingiPads,andadoptingtechnologyinschool.Parents,
studentsandeducatorsfavoredapplyingforgranttocoverthisproject.

DevelopingProjectActivities

Theintendedprojecttargetagroupof120middleschoolstudentstaughtin
TechnologyEducationcourses.ThestudentswillutilizeiPadsandvariousappsina
blendedlearningenvironmentdesignedandexecutedbytheteacher.Studentwilluse
thedevicesandLearningManagementSoftware(Schoology)tofrontloadcontentand
contextatadifferentiatedpace.Studentswillalsoutilizethedevicestopreplanand
designprojects.Thestudentswillconductasurveythreetimes(pre,mid,andpost)to
evaluatetheirperceptionoftheblendedlearningenvironmentandtheirengagement
withthecontent.

andresearchcapabilities.Currently,theTechnologyEducationDepartmentmeetswith
approximately40%ofthestudentpopulationwithinthethreedifferentcoursesat
PrairieviewSchool(216/532students).Thisisthelargestelectiveareawithinthe
school,andwillprovidethelargestdatasetofindividualstotesttheeffectivenessofthe
BlendedClassroomGrantProgram.

ThechartbelowhighlightsthemajoractivitiesthattheBlendedClassroomGrant
ProposalwouldmeetintermsoftheneedsofstudentsatPrairieviewintheWaukee
CommunitySchoolDistrict.Themajoractivitiesrevolvearoundthestudentsabilityto
accessthelearningcontentinmultiplemethods,asmuchastheywant,andfrom
anywherethattheyhaveaccesstotechnologyinandoutoftheclassroom.Blended
Learningallowsthestudent
learnsatleastinpartthroughonlinedeliveryofcontentand
instructionwithsomeelementofstudentcontrolovertime,place,pathorpace.The

Therearemanydifferentsourcesoffundingavailableforteachersandadministrators

isgoingtoproposeourBlendedLearningGranttothelocalWaukeeCommunitySchool
DistrictFoundation.Therearenorestrictionsonhowmuchweareallowedtoaskforin
termsoffunding,itisalocalgrantopportunitythatisgoingtodirectlyimprovethe
studentswithinitsowndistrict,andthescoringrubricusedtodeterminelikelihoodof
funding,arecoveredbyalloftherequiredsectionsoftheScholasticGrantProposal.

lookingforwaysinwhichthedistrictcanimproveitsstandingintechnologyandprovide
morestudentsequalaccesstodifferentmethodsoflearningintheclassroom.

Asstatedpreviously,theWaukeeDistrictisactivelylookingformanydifferentwaysin
whichstudentscanlearninnewanddifferentways,andalsoinbeingabletoimprove
theoverallabilityforstudentstousetechnologycorrectlyandeffectively.
D.AssessmentofNeeds
PrairieviewSchoolstudentsdonthavedailyaccesstothecomputerand
teachersarerequiredtoreservecomputerlabsatthebeginningofeachweekfortheir
classrooms.Thestudentsuseislimitedtotwodaysforeachclassroomeveryweek,if
therearenoextendedprojectsforotherclasses.Prairieviewclassroomsarenot
designedforblendedorflippedlearning.Thegoalofwritingthisgrantproposal,isto
implementa1:1learningenvironmentinsideofoneclassroom,toactasatestclassin
BlendedLearningwithinPrairieview.Iftheevaluationcriteriaaremetorexceeded
withinthetimeframe,thiswillprovidevaluabledatainmoreclassroomsmovingtoa
BlendedLearningenvironment.
Studentscurrentaccesstocomputersisverylimitedinsidetheschool,students
havereportedthattheyhaveaworkingknowledgeofusingcomputers,tablets,and
smartphonesoutsidetheclassroom.Thesurveyconductedshowedthat75%of
studentshaveagoodbackgroundofusingtechnologytoaccomplishtheirassignments
athomeandforresearchandprojectcreation.
MostteachersinPrairieviewschoolalsodonthavestudentlaptopsoriPads
(tablets)touseintheirclassrooms.Thisproposalistoprovideeachteacherwithone
iPadinPrairieviewSchooltobeabletoutilizeLMSandtobeabletodevelopcurriculum
andclassroommaterialsusingtechnology.Trainingteacherswillbethefirststepinthis
processofmovingtoblendedlearning.Teachersopinionsurveyshownthatonly25%
arereadytouseiPadseffectivelywithoutmoretraining.
Inthelastparentsadministrationmeetingasurveyconductedbetweenparents
concernsblendedlearningandusingiPadsinPrairieviewschool,55%ofparents
desiredmovingforwardonusingiPads,andadoptingtechnologyinschool.Parents,
studentsandeducatorsfavoredapplyingforgranttocoverthisproject.

E.GoalsandObjectives
Thepurposeofthisgrantistoactasatrialclassroomandprogramdesignedto
incorporatetheblendedlearningconceptandtheimprovementsonoverallstudent
learning.ThegrantfundingwillbeusedtopurchaseAppleiPads,protectivecases,and
softwarenecessaryforthesubjectandlearningcontent.Theclassroomenvironmentin
whichthisgrantwillbeused,isaTechnologyEducationclassroomwherethereare
currentlythreedifferentcoursesbeingtaughtIntrotoWoodworking,IntrotoDrafting
andDesign,andIntrotoEngineeringDesign(ProjectLeadtheWay).

TheiPadswillbeutilizedinamannerthatwouldallowstudentstohavedailyaccessto
