Overview
Topic and Overarching Goal: Children will be able to recognize patterns.
Behavioral Objectives:
1. When shown a picture, 4/5 children will be able to distinguish between solid and patterned items.
2. When asked, each child will be able to identify what letter their name begins with.
3. Children, when asked, will be able to point out one pattern in the classroom.
Preparing The Activity
Observation and Assessment:
What interests, assessments, prior knowledge, observations, and/or experiences have you observed to explain
why you have chosen this activity?
I have been going over the Preschool First assessment requirements and I realized that patterns is not something
that the children in this classroom understand. Last semester, in Head Start, they were working on distinguishing
patterns and I figured this group could also do it.
Activity/ies Description: What are you doing for your activity/ies? Describe in very specific step-by-step detail,
using numbers or bullets. Write descriptions as if you will be giving instructions to a substitute teacher:

Gather children on the shapes rug.

Show children chart (Chart has squares with alphabet on it)
Ask children to identify the letters on the chart.
Explain the scavenger hunt.
Ask one or two children at a time to go find something that starts with each letter.
Talk about letters in each persons name, while waiting.
Activity can go until each child has had a turn OR until alphabet chart is full.
Excuse children from group once they can correctly identify what letter their name starts with.

Tape bubble wrap to 4 rolling pins (or paint rollers).

Try to keep bubble wrap inflated. Change when bubbles have been popped.
Place 4 trays at the table with access to paper.
Teacher to place small amounts of poster paint onto tray.
Use only primary colors.
Trays will be traded out or cleaned when excess paint builds up. Can be changed in between children.
Allow children to paint with rolling pins/paint roller and bubble wrap.
When supervising activity, talk about the types of pattern they are creating.

2nd Day Changes: Specifically and concretely explain how your activity/ies will change for the 2nd day. How
will you extend and expand the learning?
Art activity will remain the same, EXCEPT bubble wrap is to be replaced with string tied to the rolling pin/paint
roller to create a texture/pattern.
Group activity to change in that the chart will have the childrens name. They need to find an item that starts
with the letter their name starts with. The activity ends once each child has one item that their name starts with.
Can continue and use last names OR second letter in their name.
Planning Assessment
How will you assess your behavioral objectives?
1. During circle time, I will show children a set of pictures (attached).
2. Before excusing children for centers, I will ask each child what letter their name begins with.
3. During centers, I will ask each child to point out a pattern in the room.
Creativity
Explain why your plan enhances a childs creativity:
The art activity is open ended because there is not a specific result that I am looking for, only that they are able
to experience something new. They are allowed to use the provided colors, or mix them to make new colors.
Later in the week, they can experience something similar but with a different item, providing different results.
The group activity allows the children to move about the classroom and pick whatever item they like. They can
get creative in that they can choose ANY item.
Planning for Implementation
What center or places within the classroom will you be utilizing?
Art center
Rug area
List the materials you need to supply:

Rolling pins/pain rollers

Bubble wrap
String
Alphabet chart
Name chart
Tally sheets and checklists

List the materials you would like to have the lab school supply:

Trays
Red, yellow, blue poster paint
Paper

Address the documentation to be completed (how, when, who, what?):

1. I will show children pictures. I will ask another teacher or lab student to keep a tally sheet of how many
student were able to distinguish patterns vs. solid pictures. During 2nd circle time, before outside time but
after centers.
2. During the first circle time, I will ask each child what letter their name begins with. I will ask another
teacher or lab student to check off if each child was able to do this or not.
3. Take pictures of what the kids think are patterns. I will ask them to point out patterns during center play
and take the pictures then.
