Exercises 8
1. Let : 2 2 denote the shift map ( s)i = si+1 on the sequence space 2 = {s =
(s0 , s1 , s2 , . . .) : si {0, 1}}. How many periodic points of prime period 6 does have in 2 ?

2. Let qc (x) = x2 + c, with c < (5 + 2 5)/4. Let I = [p+ (c), p+ (c)], and let = {x I :
qnc (x) I for all n N}. Let 2 be the space of all sequences s = (s0 , s1 , s2 , . . .) with si {0, 1}
for all i. Let S : 2 be the itinerary map defined in lectures. Show that the inverse S1 :
2 is continuous.
3. Let qc (x) = x2 + c. Prove that if c < 1/4, then there is a unique > 1 such that qc is
topologically conjugate to f (x) = x(1 x) via a linear map of the form h(x) = x + .
4. Prove that the Cantor ternary or middle-thirds set discussed in lectures is a Cantor set, that is
closed, totally disconnected and perfect.
5. For each of the following decide whether or not the set X is dense in Y . You should justify
your answer.
(a) X is the Cantor ternary set C and Y = [0, 1];
(b) X is the set of endpoints of intervals removed from [0, 1] to form the Cantor ternary set C,
and Y is the Cantor ternary set C.
(c) X = {(s0 , s1 , . . .) 2 : s j = 0 implies s j+1 = 1}, Y = 2 ;
(d) X = {(s0, s1 , . . .) 2 : infinitely many s j = 0}, Y = 2 .
