Lab Report

Limitations on Cell Size

Purpose:
To experiment how salt come out differently
with a different size of agar.
To make student familiar with lab equipment.
To mass a salt in water.
Hypothesis:
-The conclusion about the experiment will tell you
that when the agar has been cut in two pieces to
eight pieces the graph will get higher
for the example

Materials: LabQuest, LabQuest App, Vernier

Conductivity Probe, 400 mL beaker, glass stirring
rod, utility clamp, agar cubes, distilled water,
metric ruler, Logger Pro, ring stand
Results:

Discussion: In the experiment, The result is a bit

error. Number of slope(m) in first to third time is
increase but in third to fourth time is decrease.
The reason are we stir water too fast. In each stir
time we change member to stir so, this may be

different frequency. We can improve our

experiment by stir not too fast not too slow and
let only one member in group to stir water So, it
will appear constant frequency. This experiment
can use in many way. It can help you to do other
experiment. You know how to use selector, how
to plot graph and how to analyse result.

Questions:
1. What is the relationship between rate of ion
exchange and surface-to-volume ratio?
- If the surface-to-volume
rate of ion exchange will
surface-to-volume ratio is
ion exchange will increase,

ratio is decrease, the

decrease. and if the
increase, the rate of
also.

2. What is the advantage of a cell that has a

large surface-to-volume ratio?
- Large surface-to-volume ratio it mean that you
can exchange more nutrients and can relate
waste well.

3. Which is more efficient at exchanging

materials, a small or a large cell? Explain.

- A small cell. In limited space in cell, the

materials in a small cell are not free to move, it
made many chance of the exchange of materials.
In a large cell, the materials near the center are
less than the materials near the border. So a
small cell is more efficient than a large cell.
