UNIT 9: SIMPLE AND COMPLEX MACHINES

SIMPLE MACHINES

DEFINITION

Tools that make work easier

Reduce the effort needed to work

CAN DO:

Lift,

carry,

cut,

break

objects

3 MAIN TYPES:

1-Levers

2-Inclined planes

3-Pulleys

Have one or two parts

1-LEVERS

Rigid bar with a pivot point

a lever has two forces: an effort and a resistance

Example: a seesaw

2-INCLINED PLANE

is a ramp used to lift and lower objects

it is the simplest of the simple machines ( nothing moves to make it work)

example: a ladder

3-PULLEYS

a wheel with an axle in the centre and a rope that runs around the outside

COMPLEX MACHINES

DEFINITION: Have many parts and combine 2 or more simple machines

EXAMPLE: a tricycle

WHAT MAKES MACHINES WORK?

to lift and lower objects

All machines need energy to work

Types:

People or animal energy

Electricity energy

Mains electricity

Energy from burning fuels

batteries

fossil fuels
