Reflection on JIF:
Creating a Found Poem
JIF is a found poem that I wrote in class on April 10, 2015. To make this
found poem I searched through the words on the label of a JIF peanut
butter jar. When I was reading the ingredients I chose words that really
stood out; when I think about Jif peanut butter I think about how fatty
and sugar-filled it is, so those were the words I chose.
I really enjoyed the process of making this poem; I found it much
easier than creating an opposite poem, yet it still challenged me to
think critically. I felt the freedom of and control of being able to choose
which words I want to create meaning, and I felt powerful.
Making this poem also made me think about poetry differently. I
started to realize that poems are everywhere, and that people can
choose to see them or not. People can pick out words when reading
text-books, or advertisements, or even food labels, and change their
meaning by changing how they think of them. This is called changing
the context.
I could see myself making this type of poem again in the future, as I
enjoyed it so much.
