It is one of the rich indigenous textile
tradition of the Malay world.
Batik is one of the exquisite forms of
traditional textile that is popular until today
for many Asian countries like Indonesia, India
and Malaysia.

Canting was invented in Java and the


word is actually Javanese
The art of drawing on cloth with a
canting (copper spout through which
flows the molten wax) was an ancient
tradition, practiced by the Javanesse
since the 12th century.
Batik was mentioned in the 17th
century Malay Annals. The legend goes
when Laksamana Hang Nadim was
ordered byMalacca King, Sultan
Mahmud, to sail to India to buy 140
pieces of serasah cloth (batik) with 40
types of flowers depicted on each.

HOW?
The parts to be left
uncoloured are coated with
wax.
Once the motifs are ready,
coulours are spread on the
cloth. Colours are seep
through the unwaxed areas
on the cloth.
For example, the Malaysian
batik tulis uses brush and
dipped in molten wax and
then drawn on the cloth.
