The teacher will show students Mondrians two
paintings. Ask students what is similar and what is
different? How would you describe them to people who
have never seen them before?

What are primary colors? What are horizontal and
vertical lines?
Modeling of the Concept
The teacher will introduce Piet Mondrian by showing a
picture of him. The students will each receive a
biography sheet about him. As a class, the teacher will
go over facts about Piet Mondrian and have students
read the facts aloud.
The teacher will then return to the Composition in Red,
Blue, and Yellow
Transition
The students will move to two tables. During this time, a
student will pass out the packets of materials.
Guiding the Practice
The teacher will review the materials with the students.
The students will be instructed to take out a pencil and
their straight edge. The teacher will show the students
how to draw lines on their letter so that it doesnt end up
like a grid.
After drawing the lines, the students will go over the
lines with the black crayon.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will create their own version of Composition in
Red, Blue, and Yellow on the cutout of the first letter of
their name.
Since they already have the lines drawn, students will
have to decide where to color the squares using the red,
blue, and yellow crayons.
During this time, the teacher will be monitoring the class
to see if any students need assistance drawing lines or
squares.
Students will then write two sentences about how their
creation compares to Mondrians.
Adaptations/Accommodations for Students with Special Needs
ADHD The student will pass out the materials to her
peers.

Summary & Review of the Learning
Students show their art and show that even though they
all have the same lines and colors, they look different.
After sharing their work with the class, they will hang
their piece in the classroom art gallery.
