CE202 Spring 2014

Due on 3/5/14 (4:00 pm)

Q1. The man pushes on the 30-kg crate with a force F. The force is
always directed at 30 from the inclined plane as shown, and its
magnitude is increased until the crate begins to slide. Determine the
crate's initial acceleration if the coefficient of static friction is s = 0.4
and the coefficient of kinetic friction is k = 0.25.

Homework 05

20

Answer: a = 2.17 m/s2

Q2. The 8-kg block is confined to move along the smooth parabolic
path. The attached spring restricts the motion and, due to the roller
guide, always remains horizontal as the block descends. If the
spring has a stiffness of k = 10 N/m, and unstretched length of 0.25
m, determine the normal force of the path on the block at the instant
x = 0.7 m when the block has a speed of 3.5 m/s. Also, what is the
rate of increase in the speed of the block at this point? Neglect the
mass of the roller and the spring.

Answer: Fn = 13 N

You MUST show a clear free body diagram with each solution. (Coordinate axes, forces and their directions.)

Homework 05

Q3. The smooth surface of the vertical cam is defined by the curve
r = (0.5 0.25cos) m. The slotted bar rotates counterclockwise with
an angular acceleration of = 2 rad/s2, and when = 120 the
angular velocity is = 6 rad/s. Determine the normal force acting
on the 2-kg roller and the force exerted by the bar on it at this
instant.
The attached spring has a stiffness k = 100 N/m and an unstretched
length of 0.1 m.

Answer: Fn = 17.3 N

You MUST show a clear free body diagram with each solution. (Coordinate axes, forces and their directions.)
