My Philosophy of

Teaching
Mathematics
I believe:
That teachers must encourage students to communicate
their mathematical thinking
Teachers consistently are building from foundations that students bring and learn
from their community, such as school and home. Teachers have the
responsibility to encourage students to communicate their mathematical
thinking, and promote the safe communication space for students to share.

That mathematics should be taught through real world

connections
Teachers bringing and implementing real world connections related to the lives
of the students will further the motivation and engagement to learn math. It
allows students to make those deeper level-thinking connections, while
fostering their interest in mathematics. Teachers must also coach
mathematical critical thinking skills that can be applied to daily life.

That teachers must create higher order thinking

mathematical problems to promote cognitive processing
Teachers must develop opportunities for higher order thinking to occur so
students can think critically about mathematics, and understand that there
are multiple ways and strategies to solve a problem besides just getting the
answers. The importance of mathematics is obtaining the ability and
strategies to solve, not necessarily getting to that right answer.

That teachers must introduce students to a variety of

strategies used to solve mathematical ideas
That students must be promoted to use mathematical
knowledge in new contexts
