In 1836, the Texans


decided to declare
Texas an independent
republic. Sam
Houston took
command of the small
Texas army. One small
company was
stationed at a fort in
southeast Texas. The
second company,
headed by William
Travis, stood at the
Alamo, an old mission
in San Antonio. In
addition, Juan Segun
led a group of Tejanos
in support of the
rebellion.
Traviss force defended
the Alamo for 12 days.
Then the Mexicans

captured it and killed


all but 5 Texans. The
Battle of the Alamo
ended. The Mexicans
executed the 5
survivors.
