III. Lesson Objectives


5.4.a- Compare the lives of slave families and free blacks
IV. Procedures:
Introduction The class will go over the word courage,
and what makes a person courageous.
Teaching/Activities:
1.
The class will review unknown words from the
text; if students know a word, they can look at
their words from the previous day.
2.
The class will re-read the text and focus on when
Henry was sold to a new master,why it was
important to him to escape into the North, and
how he escaped; the class will explain what is
happening in the text by using information from
the book.
3.
The class will discuss what is the main idea of
the story, and the differenc between the topic
and theme of the story.
4.
The class will discuss and describe Henry and
how he was treated from the South to the North.
Closure:
The class will wrap up the lesson by coming up with
ideas of how to escape to the North.
VI. Evaluation/Assessment:
Assessment of Objectives:
The students will create a word cloud where they use
the words from the story that are the most important to

them. This will show if they understand the theme of the


story being courage, or if they focus on the topic of the story.
