I chose this artifact from Dian Squires Organization and Governance in Higher

Education course that is offered in the second semester of the program. I chose this
artifact because I believe that it reflects the analytical inquiry learning outcome of the
program. This assignment demonstrates each of the competencies related to analytical
inquiry by challenging me to deconstruct and reconstruct a policy at an institution by
researching current effective processes and offering suggested directions for the future.
This assignment helped me connect what I was learning in the classroom directly to my
work at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).
Throughout this assignment I developed and supported several reasonable and
logically sound interpretations of IITs Good Samaritan policy by interviewing staff
members and integrating research into the reconstruction of a new policy. From these
conversations and research I was able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the
current policy and develop a basic understanding of the need for change. This
assignment allowed me to analyze various organizational, curricular, fiscal, legal,
cultural and historical structures and perspectives by challenging me to research each of
those facets and how they relate back to the change I was proposing for the university.
By identifying stakeholders and those the policy change would affect, I was able to look
at the policy change proposal in a variety of contexts. I was also able to use theoretical
and empirical research to address and solve administrative and instructional problems in
colleges and universities by benchmarking institutions across the nation and their
policies. From that research I was able to reconstruct a policy for IIT and offer various

ways in which the institution can improve its conduct practices. Finally, I gained the
skills to learn the importance of continually assessing my own personal analytical
abilities by critically reflecting on how I can incorporate this change into my current
position as well as positions I hold at other institutions in the future.
