Classroom Environment
The desks are set up in six groups of four with one desk off to the side. There is a space at the back of the room for the students to sit
on the floor in a group. The classroom has a white board and smart board at the front of the room. It also has an elmo to project on the
smart board. The class has four iPads. At the back of the classroom there is a small group table. There are two other smaller tables for
small group work. The classroom has books displayed at the front of the room for independent reading. The teachers desk is in the
front right corner of the room.

WALK-AWAY (As a result of this lesson, what do I want the students to know, understand, and be able to do?)
State Standard/Objective:
Standard 1
Students will understand that the shape of Earth and the moon are spherical and that Earth rotates on its axis to produce
the appearance of the sun and moon moving through the sky.
Objective 2
Describe the movement of Earth and the moon and the apparent movement of other bodies through the sky.
b.Use a chart to show that the moon orbits Earth approximately every 28 days.
Content Walk-Away: I will make a chart with the class to show that the moon cycles.
Language Walk-Away: I will use a chart to show that the moon orbits Earth approximately every 28 days.
Vocabulary: review-chart, orbit

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE (What evidence do I need to show the students have

learned the Walk-Away?)

Modifications/Accomodations (ELL, IEP, GATE, etc.)

Formative Evidence (checking for understanding throughout the lesson):

Student discussion, writing, observation, answers, activity
Content Walk-Away Evidence (Summative): Students will make a class chart and use it
to show the moon cycles.
Language Walk-Away Evidence (Summative): Students will be able to discuss what
they observed and write about how the moon orbits the Earth approximately every 28
days.

ELL- Visuals, activity

GATE- activity
Behavior- reminders, cueing,
activity (chance to move
around)

Approx. ACTIVE LEARNING PLAN

Activate/Building Background Knowledge

I need everyone to the back carpet in 5,4,3,2,1! Good. Yesterday, we learned how the Earth and moon move.
What are the two words we used to describe how to Earth moves around the sun? Good, revolution and
rotation. The Earth revolves or moves around the sun. Today, we are going to be learning more about the
moon! As the Earth is revolving around the sun it is rotating or spinning. Read the book: The Moon Seems to
Change, by Franklyn Branley SIOP 4,6, 7,8,9,22
Our objective for today is I will make a chart with the class and use it to show the moon cycles and be able to
discuss my observations. Everyone read it with me. Good! SIOP 1,2
Formative assessment:
Learning Goal: Students will know the objective and have background knowledge.
Success Criteria: Students will say the objective and listen to story.
Assessment Strategy:Hear the students say the objective and engaged during story.
Modification/accommodations: (ELL, IEP, GATE, etc.)
ELL: visual of the objective.

Focus Lesson (I do it) 5E-Engage

Today we are going to be drawing pictures of a model of the moon. We are going to have to follow directions really well
today or our activity to work. This is going to represent our moon! Show basketball. This is going to be the Sun. Show
light. We are going to be sitting in a circle around the moon. Then I will shine the light or the sun on the moon. Each
one of you will draw what you see. Each person in the circle represents a different phase of the moon.Tell your partner
what we are going to do. SIOP 10, 11,26
Formative Assessment:
Learning Goal: Students understand the activity.
Success Criteria: Students are able to explain directions to classmate.
Assessment Strategy: Listen to students and observation during instruction.
Modification/accommodations:
ELL-Visuals
behavior- Partner explanation, exceptions.
Guided Instruction (We do it) 5E-Explore
Once everyone is in their spots pass out a black piece of paper and chalk to each student. Everyone draw a circle
representing the moon on your paper. Once the sun is shining on the moon shade in the part of the moon that you see lit.

Some of you will color in the whole thing, some of you will color in none and some of you will color in only a part. It is very
important that you do your very best because when we are finished we will be able to see the different phases the of the
moon. SIOP 6,12 Students draw what they see. SIOP 20, 21.
Have students stand up with their drawings and get in a line and put papers down. Students will walk down
the line looking at the papers and seeing the phases of the moon.
Formative Assessment:
Learning Goal: Students will be ready to start the activity.
Success Criteria: Students are in a circle and have paper and chalk.
Assessment Strategy: Observation.
Collaborative/Cooperative (You do it together) 5E-Explain
Students go back to their seat. Discuss in your groups what your noticed about the drawings. You can get
back up and look at them. Record some of your observations in your journals. SIOP 22,21,24,25 Class
discussion about observations. The moon goes through this cycle about every 28 days. It takes the moon
about 28 days to go through its cycle. Show picture of moon phases in calendar. SIOP 4
Formative Assessment:
Learning Goal: Students will make observations, record and discuss.
Success Criteria: Conversations and written observations
Assessment Strategy: observation and class discussion
Modification/accommodations:
IEP- extra support during recording and discussion
Independent (You do it alone) 5E-Elaborate
Correct or add anything you would like to the observations your made. It is ok to change what you observed and add
things you have learned during our discussion. SIOP 30

Summative Assessment: Student journal entry
Modification/accommodations: IEP- Written vocabulary words
GATE- open ended
Closure/Review of walk-aways, vocabulary, and essential questions
(Note: Closure includes student interactions, reflection, and/or demonstrations.)
What are some other things we learned today? Today our objective was I will make a chart and use it to show the moon
cycles and be able to discuss my observations We made a chart in our activity and discussed the moon cycle. SIOP 27,28

REFLECTION AFTER LESSON

How can I use the assessment data to reflect on & evaluate the outcomes of teaching and learning? How can I transfer
what I learned from teaching this lesson to future teaching? What was effective and not effective? What goals can I set to
improve my practice and student learning?
To improve this lesson for next time I teach it I will be more explicit in my explanation of what the goal or outcome of
drawing a pictures will be. I will make sure that the students understand that it is important to do their best work and to
stay in their place in the circle. Before the lesson I will also create a paper with a circle already drawn and labeled top and
bottom. Some of the students got their paper flipped upside down throwing off the phases of the moon visual. I will also
use smaller pieces of paper and have the students create a chart that we can display on the wall. I think that this would
create a better visual for the students than just seeing the pictures lined up on the floor.
The lesson did not flow as well as I would have liked. To solve this problem I will create a powerpoint with the vocabulary
words, directions, visuals of moon phases, and videos.
The book and video were very effective tools in this lesson. They were good visuals and had a lot of great information. I
think they were affective because they appealed and interested different groups of students. The boys in the class loved the
Bill Nye video because it incorporated baseball.
