ZIMMERMAN TELEGRAM

In early 1917 a telegram sent by German Foreign

Minister Arthur Zimmerman was intercepted by
British intelligence and decoded. The message called
for Mexico to join the Central Powers in the event that
the United States chose to enter the war. In return,
Germany promised Mexico financial support, and the
territory that was taken away from them by the
United States in prior wars. Germany went on to say
that, with Mexicos help, they believed victory would
be ensured and peace would be achieved within a
few months. After reading the decoded message
Americans were outraged. Americans had negative
feelings towards both Mexicans and Germans at the
time and the Telegram only damaged these
relationships further. Seeing enemy nations teaming
up behind their backs deeply upset many Americans.
Knowledge of this telegram would help justify the
United States action of entering World War I later on.
