The Last Resort: A Novel

Alison Lurie

Summary:
The Last Resort: A Novel tells a story about a famous writer, Wilkie
Walker, who has been accomplishing his last book, The Copper Beech. Along
the way, he figures he has cancer due to blood being seen in his stool. He
has been acting weird lately so his wife, Jenny Walker suggested they go to
Key Westthe Last Resort-- this winter. Depressed at his findings, he agrees
to go to the place where he can plan his demise. Key West was no ordinary
place. Lives are changed and even short-term visitors can experience things
beyond their imagination. During the whole of their stay, the Walkers
experienced many things: Jenny met new friends, had lots of life-changing
experiences and Wilkie had many attempts to suicide. In the end, Wilkie did
not end up taking his life. He realized he had to live and be with his wife.
Analysis and Evaluation:
Alison Lurie wrote a good novel, showcasing the realities of the world
nowadays. She had the sense of humor injected in her book though for those
who cant really understand American humor, one finds it difficult to
comprehend, like me. I had difficulty in understanding some of its humor. I
admire the effort to include such art. It made the book colorful.
As I read the story, at first, I found it very boring. But, in the long run, I
became interested in it. There were things in the early part of the book that I
did not get but later in the story, it became vivid to me. The conflict of the
story was very evident. The only thing I really did not understand was the
concluding part. In my own point of view, it was boring. It did not give a
bang to the whole story.
The way she wrote the book was unique. I appreciate that very much.
The only thing I could not really get was including these indecent words in
her art as expressions. Well, probably it may be due to the custom of her
place or whatever. Yet, amidst all these, it made the book more realistic in a
sense. As a whole, it was a great job done by Lurie.
Conclusion/Recommendation(s):
The Last Resort: A Novel was a good and realistic book. I recommend
people of intermediate level to read this kind of book. It presents a very

realistic situation that might be applicable in our modern situation and/or

society.
