Habitat Lesson Plan Reflection

This lesson was taught in my regular 3rd grade classroom and it involved me
delving into habitats. My classroom already has students split into rows so I
gave each row an animal and I then asked the students to come together
and decide which habitat the animal would belong to. I gave them a list of
possible habitats and asked for them to come up with a few reasons as to
why the animal would belong in that particular habitat. I gave them time to
work on this, then I had each group share their guesses with the class. I then
asked them what sort of habitat Salt Lake City would be. From there, I asked
the students to consider that Salt Lake City was a habitat for lots of different
animals and to keep their eyes open.

What worked with the lesson was having the students work together. They
really enjoyed working together and it allowed them to effectively compare
ideas.

What I could have done differently is have the students move their desks into
tables so they could work together more effectively. I kept the rows as they
were which lead to some students having to leave their desks and move.
This also lead to some students being distracted, which could have been
avoided.

I know that the lesson was a success because I had all of the groups present
their suggested habitats to the class. I also walked amongst the groups while
they were working to ensure that they were on task.
