HOUSE TEST

Theory of machines (4th Sem. Mech Engg.)

Time:
M.M 50

hrs.

Note: - Draw Neat And Clean Sketches.

Q NO1. Name different type of mechanisms and explain double slider crank mechanism
and its inversions. (15)
QNO.2 Explain briefly different type of frictional clutches? Draw and explain single
plate friction clutch.
or
Qno.3 the cutter of a broaching machine is pulled by square threaded screw of 55
mm external diameter and10 mm pitch. The operating nut takes the axial load of
400 N on a flat surface of 60mm internal diameter and 90 mm external diameter. If
the coefficient of friction is .15for all contact surfaces on the nut, determine the
power required to rotate the operating nut, when the cutting speed is 6m/min.
(15)
QNO.4 Attempt any five.
(a) Explain ball bearing with a sketch.
(b) Friction may be useful or objectionable in a machine. Give one practical
example of each.
(c) Write a short note on journal bearing.
(d) Write a short note on slip in belts.
(e) Explain the advantages and disadvantages of v-belt over flat belts.
(f) Explain different type of chains.
(g) What is crowning of pulleys.
(h) Find the power transmitted by a belt running over a pulley of 600 mm
diameter at 200 rpm .The coefficient of friction between the belt and the
pulley is .25 angles of rap 1600 and maximum tensions in the belt is 2500N.
(i) A 150mm diameter valve, against which a steam pressure of 2MN/m 2 is
acting, is closed by means of a square threaded screw of 50 mm in external
diameter with 6 mm pitch. if coefficient of friction is .12; find the torque
require to turn the handle.
(j) Draw a neat diagram of Oldhams coupling and explain its working.
(k) Differentiate between a machine and a structure.
