Title: Cricket Chirp Experiment

Question/Purpose:
Does the environmental temperature affect the number of cricket chirps?
Prediction:
Madison: I think that when the temperature is warmer the crickets will chirp
more.
Tiffany: I think that when temperature increases, crickets will chirp more.
Hypothesis:
Madison: If the temperature is warmer than the crickets will chirp more
because they are cold-blooded so the colder it is the slower the crickets move, but
the warmer it is the faster they move, therefore making more sound which to us is
the chirps.
Tiffany: If the temperature increases, then the crickets will chirp more
because, based on my research, crickets have chemical reactions to warmer
weather. When there is warm weather, the crickets muscles contract and produce
more frequent chirping.
Materials:
The materials in our experiment include four cricket, a cricket habitat (dirt,
rocks, flowers, grass, paper tube, and sticks), a LabQuest, probe,

Procedure:
We will create a cricket habitat for our crickets and make sure we have an
equal amount of female and male crickets. We will create a box so it blocks out all
the light because crickets chirp more in the dark, but with a tiny hole so that we can
put the LabQuest that measures temperature in it and place a heating pad in it. We
will keep making the temperature warmer and warmer and see how many times the

cricket chirps as the temperature rises. We will record the chirps using the LabQuest
for 5 minutes. Then we will review the recording and see how many chirps the
crickets makes.
