Here are some tips for you on how to answer Paper 2 (SPM format):

1. Topic: Shading areas of inequalities. (i). Usually, the question gives 2 lines only.
So, draw the 3rd straight line first. If the equation of the line is y = c, then the line
is a horizontal one, passing through the y-axis at c. If the equation is x = a, then
the line is a vertical one, passing the x-axis at a. If the equation is y = mx + c, then
it is a line with a gradient m and y-intercept at c. (ii). After drawing the 3rd line,
then only you shade the area engulf by the 3 lines.. Put your pens or pencils on
each of the 3 lines, and you will get the area to shade...
2. Topic: Set. (i). If the question is on shading areas of sets, then putting numbers on
each of the area in the diagram would help a lot. Just put areas 1, 2, 3, 4, ...and so
on. (ii). I hope you know what the symbols of the operations involved are, i.e.
intercept, union, and complement. List down the areas 1 and 2, or 3 and 5 or just
4..., and so on... Then only you shade the area...
3. Topic: Quadratic Equation. (i). You will be given an equation NOT in quadratic
form. Arrange the algebraic terms into a quadratic form, i.e. ax2 + bx + c = 0 (ax
square plus/minus bx plus/minus c = 0) (ii) Factorise the quadratic equation
manually. Don't use the calculator. You'll lose marks if you do... (iii) There should
be 2 answers, whatever the question is...
4. Topic: Simultaneous Equations. (i) 3 ways to solve this question - elimination
method, substitution method or matrix method. (ii) The elimination method is the
simplest. Just multiply the whole equation so that the coefficient of any one of the
unknown is the same. You may multiply one or both equations. (iii) Add or minus
the simultaneous equations so that only one unknown is left behind. Then, you
will get the value of one of the unknown. (iv) Substitute the value to get the other
value of the unknown....
5. Topic: Volume of Solids. (i) The formulae of volumes of solids are given on pages
2,3 and 4 of the SPM Paper 2. Just pick the correct shapes... (ii) You must write
down the formulae with the values substituted in the formula. If you don't, you'll
lose marks... (iii) Use the calculator (after writing down the workings) to get the
final answers...
6. Topic: Lines and Planes in 3D. (i) This topic is usually a burden to most students.
That's normal... (ii) Just find the normal line of the line or the plane. You need to do a lot
of "recognizing" the angle involved by doing a lot of exercises on this topic. No short
cut !!! My advice is to find someone who master this topic. It's quite difficult to show it
in 3D here...
