SanDiegonatives.ManyofthefirepitsonFiestaIslandhavebeenremoved,onlytomakeitharderfor
thecommunitytofindapit.
SpecificFacts
:
1. TheannualcosttothecitysParkandRecreationDepartmenttoservicethefirepitswhich
arelocatedinMissionBayandonthebeachesofLaJolla,MissionBeach,PacificBeachand
OceanBeachis$173,000.(2)
2. Overthepast10years,thenumberoffirepitsonSanDiegobeacheshasgraduallydeclined.
In1990,thecityhad450ringshowevermanywereremovedinresponsetoresident
complaintsandbudgetreductions.Infiscalyear2004,theCityCouncilreducedthenumberof
fireringsfrom300to150sincethattime,approximately35werereplaced(6)
3. Thatcostwasprimarilyduetotheneedtocleanthefirepitsofashanddebrisatleastoncea
weektoprotectthehealthandsafetyofbeachusers.Thecleaningprocessrequiredtwo
employees,usingafrontloaderandadumptruck,andtookanaverageof30minutesforeach

traditionofSanDiegobeachfiresalivebyservicingthelocalareawiththerightequipmentand
suppliestohaveaclassicbeachfire,whileensuringsafetyregulationsaremetandbeachesare
