2 Appy social work ethical principles to guide professional practice

Practice Behaviors:
Recognize and manage personal values in a way that allows professional values to guide
practice. Make ethical decisions by applying standards of the NASW Code of Ethics; tolerate
ambiguity in resolving conflicts; apply concepts of ethical reasoning to arrive at principled
decisions.
I chose the above competency for SW 3410 Ethics and Values in social work. Ethical
practice in social work refers to professional self-awareness, critical thinking and the ability to
manage stressful situations. Social work values refer to Social work ethics and values are the
rules set by the National Association of Social Workers to guide the behaviors and practice of
social workers in the social work profession.
According to the NASW code of ethics, social workers are obliged to utilize the values
within the social work profession. It is the obligation of social workers to conduct themselves
ethically and to engage in ethical decision-making. Ethics and Values play important roles in the
social work profession, therefore, social workers should have the knowledge about the value
base of the profession, its moral standards, and relevant laws that are set up to guide the
profession.
More so, social workers should apply social work ethical principles to complicated
situations and utilize consultation/supervision as needed. Finally, social workers are expected to
abide by the ethical principles which are based on six core values: service, social justice, dignity
and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence (NASW
n.d).
