Battle Ground and Evergreen School Districts: American Sign Language Advisory Minutes Wednesday, February 25, 2015, 5:00pm — 6:30pm ‘ASC— Large Green Conference Room urpose: To cultivate an American Sign Language Advisory Committee of teachers and industry representatives to ensure that the Evergreen and Battle Ground School Districts’ ASL Programs are providing curricula that reflect current trends in industry, and provide Objectives: ‘Explore opportunities for ASL teachers and teachers of the Deaf to collaborate and Interact for ‘the mutual benefit of teachers, ASL students, and students who are Deaf and hard of hearing; * Explore possibilities for joint fundraising among BGPS, EPS, and the Washington School for the Deaf (WSD); * Share information on recent and upcoming ASL and/or Deaf community events available for ASL students to attend; ‘Learn about Precision Exams and their potential role in high schoo! ASL programs. Kelly opened the meeting, and all in attendance introduced Welcome & Introductions | themselves. Kelly welcomed and thanked new members for joining, specifically mentioning the two ASL students and their mothers. Review and Approve Minutes Kelly handed out copies of the minutes from the November meeting, and asked for a review. Chad made a motion to accept the minutes, and Izabella added a second. The minutes were approved. Collaboration between ASL and Deaf Education Programs Kelly thanked the Deaf Education teachers for attending, and explained his desire for increased collaboration between/among the ASL and Deaf Education programs. Kelly added that he would like to facilitate ASL teachers visiting Deaf Ed classrooms next year, and will try to get approval from building principals and the CTE director. All Deaf Education and ASL teachers indicated their interest. Joint Fundraising ‘Opportunities Kellie and Tyler led a brainstorming discussion of fundraising ideas that could benefit both/either school district AND the Washington School for the Deaf. Tyler and Jane agreed that WSD’s fundraising efforts have been ineffective and welcomed any help from the Advisory Committee. Kellie explained an ASL T-shirt idea of hers, and members from both school districts and WSD expressed interest. Other ideas brought up included: ASL Events Keary Niarkos explained some changes to the monthly “Brewed Awakenings” coffee ASL Nights, including an earlier closing time, and an expressed need for students to be picked up promptly at the end of the night, Melissa mentioned the recent HHS Signing Idol event, and the upcoming “So You Think You Can Sign” competition, to be held at ‘Skyview HS. Precision Exams In the interest of time, Kelly recommended the discussion of Precision Exams be tabled until the next meeting. All were in agreement. Close ‘The meeting was closed at 6:35
