Question 1 (Heat Loss Calculation)

The construction of a warehouse building wall is illustrated below. The values of material
resistance are listed here.
Concrete: 0.71 m2*K/W
Extruded polystyrene insulation: 0.88 m2*K/W
Face brick: 0.14 m2*K/W
By considering the surface film (vertical surface, non-reflective, for winter), determine the total
resistance rating of the wall. Then determine the U-factor for the wall.

Question 2 (Heat Loss Calculation)

Determine the total resistance rating for the wood frame wall illustrated below for sections where
the insulation occurs and for sections where there is wood framing instead. The values of
material resistance are listed here.
Wood siding: 0.14 m2*K/W
Fiberboard sheathing: 0.23 m2*K/W
Fiberglass insulation: 3.34 m2*K/W
Wood framing: 0.97 m2*K/W
Gypsum board: 0.079 m2*K/W
The fraction of the framing would be about 0.2 of the entire wall. Also, considering the surface
film (vertical surface, non-reflective, for winter), determine the total resistance rating of the wall.
Then determine the U-factor for the wall.

Question 3 (Heat Loss Calculation)

A small warehouse building has 186 m2 of exterior concrete block wall having a U-factor of
0.511 W/(m2*K). Given that the indoor temperature is 21C and the outdoor temperature is
10C, calculate the heat loss from this wall.

Question 4 (Below-grade walls)

A below-grade wall has two layers: concrete (outside, 0.71 m2*K/W) and gypsum board (0.079
m2*K/W). Starting at the grade line (i.e., z1 = 0), the depth of the wall is 3.0 m. Determine the
average U-factor for this wall region.
