5E Lesson Plan

Topic: Transforming, Reflecting and Dilating Shapes on the Coordinate Plane

Objectives:
-

The students will define transformations, reflections, dilations and coordinate plane.
The students will practice transforming, reflecting and dilating shapes on the
coordinate plane.

TEKS:
111.24. (b) (6) (A) generate similar figures using dilations including enlargements and
reductions; and
111.24. (b) (6) (B) graph dilations, reflections, and translations on a coordinate plane.

Engage: To engage the students in the material, I plan to show them this YouTube video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kcc56fRtrKU about M.C. Escher to connect the math
concepts to real life situations. M.C. Escher is an artist who incorporates a lot of math concepts
into his pieces, especially for use in tessellations. Since the concept of transformations and
reflections will eventually lead to tessellating in the classroom, I would like my students to see
how simple shapes can become beautiful artwork.
Elaborate: As a class, we will then go over translations, reflections, rotations and dilations of
different shapes. I will demonstrate it on the board and have them take notes. I will ask them
questions and keep them actively engaged in what Im doing, rather than doing it all myself and
then explaining it afterward. I will then give them a few problems to work through with a partner
so that they may practice.
Explore: This is where I will allow the students to use computers to play the Transtar game.
They will work individually and I will give them about fifteen to twenty minutes to play so they
have enough time to practice each round. Each round in the game allows the students to practice
transformations, reflections, rotations and dilations. It also mixes all four of them so they have to
try multiple things on each shape.
Explain: I will then allow students to work alone or with a partner to create their own shape on a
coordinate plane and demonstrate a reflection, a transformation, a rotation and a dilation on the
coordinate plane. They will then show their work to the rest of the class and explain what they
did.
Evaluate: Students will be evaluated on what they create alone or with their partner. Most of the
grade will be on if they demonstrate transformations, reflections, rotations and dilations correctly
with their shape. A small portion of their grade will be their explanation to the class, mostly for
participation.
