Northern African Folk Tales


Overview
Students will listen to 3 Northern African folktales.

Objectives
Students will listen to a few traditional folk stories from Northern Africa, in
order to learn about the culture and story telling traditions of Northern Africa
(specifically Tunisia).

Curriculum Connections

3.1.1 Students will demonstrate an awareness of the beliefs, traditions,


and customs of the community.

Activities
Students will listen to 3 folktales (The Bachelor and the Bean, The Sabbath Lion,
and Zorahs Magic Carpet). During each reading students will answer questions
about each of the stories, and point to images in the book.

Assessment
Students will be able to answer questions about the different celebrations and
point to pictures in the textbook to demonstrate their understanding.

Book: The Sabbath Lion
Book: Zorahs Magic Carpet

Adaptations
Ben will be able to answer questions about
the folktales. Ben may also be able to read
portions of the text out loud to the class,
and identify concepts through engagement
with different images.
Dylan will be able to answer questions
about the folktales, read sections of the
chapter, and identify concepts through
engagement with images.
Jade will be able to point to different
pictures in the book as a way of answering
questions about the folktales.
Sara will be able to answer questions
about the folktales, read sections of the
chapter, and identify concepts through
engagement with images.
James will be able to point to pictures in
the book, and identify concepts through
engagement with images.
Nathan will be able to answer some
questions about the folktales, point to
pictures in the book, and identify concepts
through engagement with images.
