TEKS
Grade 8, Mathematics
(b) Knowledge and skills
(10)Two-dimensional shapes. The student applies mathematical process
standards to develop transformational geometry concepts. The student is
expected to:
(A)generalize the properties of orientation and congruence of
rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations of two-dimensional
shapes on a coordinate plane;
(B)differentiate between transformations that preserve congruence
and those that do not;
(C)explain the effect of translations, reflections over the x- or y-axis,
and rotations limited to 90, 180, 270, and 360 as applied to twodimensional shapes on a coordinate plane using an algebraic
representation; and
(D)model the effect on linear and area measurements of dilated twodimensional shapes.

Transformation
Transformation - An operation that
maps or moves the points of a figure
in a plane.
This means that a transformation is a
way of moving a shape, line, or point
across a plane.
Transformations include reflection,
translation, and rotation.

Translation
A translation is a transformation of
the plane that slides every point of a
figure the same distance in the same
direction.
This means that the shape stays
exactly how it is, but is slid over to a
new position.

Reflection
A reflection is a transformation in
which a geometric figure is reflected
across a line, creating a mirror
image.
This means that something is flipped
over a line and the resulting shape is
the mirror image of the original.

Rotation
A rotation is a transformation in
which a plane figure turns around a
fixed center point.
This means that a shape, line, or
point turns, or rotates, around a
center point.
