10.18 Using the isothermal transforma0on diagram for an iron-carbon alloy of an


eutectoid steel, specify the nature of the nal microstructure of the specimen that has
been subjected to the following treatment. In each case the specimen begins at 760oC.
(a)Cool rapidly to 350oC, hold for 103s, then quenched to room temperature.
(b)Rapidly cool to 625oC, hold for 10s , then quench to room temperature.
(c)Rapidly cool to 600oC, hold for 4s, rapidly cool to 450oC, hold for 10s, then quenched to
room temperature.
(d)Reheat the specimen in part (c) to 700oC for 20 h.
(e)Rapidly cool to 300oC, hold for 20s, then quench to room temperature. Reheat to 425oC
for 103s and slowly cool to room temperature.
