Inthelastcentury,gentrificationintheUnitedStatesbeganwithdisplacementof
minoritieseffectedbyovercrowding,poverty,andslumdwellingininnercities.
Followedbythehousingcrunchofthe1970sand1980s(Kennedy&Leonard,2001),
gentrification,likemanymovements,isaboutchange.However,unlikerevitalization
themeaningofgentrificationdoescreateanegativebacklash.Whileanattemptto
spruceupcentercitiesundertheteamurbanrenewal,revitalizationpurposeistobring
aboutpositiveneighborhoodchanges.Creatinganenvironmentofbalancewillcontinue
bringingaboutchallenges.ThefindingsshowthatCharlotteisbecomingmoreseparated.
However,toshifttheblameononecauseoranotheristodenythefactthatgentrification
issubjectivetothosewhoseekpersonalpreferences.Butwemustbemindfulofothers
thatwillnotbenefitintheseprocesses;insteadofviewingthemashumancapitalpartofa
process.Although,CharlottehasputinplaceaQualityofLifeStudyprogramthattracks
theprogressofthesegentrifiedneighborhooddevelopments.Theprogramisnew;andthe
understandingofgentrificationisrelativelynew.Therefore,thisstudymustcontinue
beingtestedandtried.Thepurposeistonotehowlongthistrendormovementwilllast
andwhathappenswhencollegestudentsdecidetohavefamiliesandmove.Willthey
returntothesuburbs?Willhistoryrepeatitselfintwentyyearsandwillthecitybecome
anotherslum?
