HYDRAULICS LAB
PRACTICE 16. Characteristics of Flow over a Dam Spillway
Objective:
To observe flow patterns associated with the flow of water over a dam spillway
Procedure
Ensure the flume is level, with no stop logs at the discharge end of the channel. Place
the dam spillway in the flume as shown in the figures below. The flowrate over each
version of the dam spillway should be varied in stages, by adjusting the flow control
valve, and at each stage the flow pattern should be observed and sketched, recording
the flowrate, and upstream and downstream water levels. Add logs and repeat the
procedure. For each dam spillway do 3 flowrates with 2 logs elevations each.(9
measurements for each dam spillway.

Report
1. Report the flow rate, upstream and downstream water levels recorded.
2. For each measurement note and sketch the flow pattern (i.e. which stage are you
observing?
3. Comment on these different methods of dissipating the kinetic energy of the water.
Which method is the most effective?
