The trendlet

The vest whether part of a natty suit,

or worn with a classic white shirt and a dark pair
of jeans is the mark this fall of a cool dude.

Would Elizabeths guy wear it?

Yep. Vests by themselves are a class act, and

under suit jackets look great with a pair of casual
pants. But when doing the vest and the jacket, Id
tell him to lose the tie. Thats trying too hard.

Wheres it come from?

Vests, or waistcoats, as they were typically called,

go back to the late 1600s. Before the days of central
heating, men wore them indoors after they removed
their suit jackets. Vests were standard throughout
the 1970s (when John Travolta brought them to the
peak of popularity in Saturday Night Fever), but by
the 90s, they were only on trend in vintage photos.
Then two things happened: Our favorite television
shows were featuring period-chic characters
Boardwalk Empires Nucky Thompson rarely is seen
without a vest. And fashion turned its focus to
menswear: Alexander McQueen, Thom Browne, and
Public School all sent collections down the spring
2015 runways with tailored vests (although Public
Schools were futuristic pullovers).

How should you wear it?

Vests are tricky: They can unintentionally land you

in the realm of the uncomfortably overdressed, or
worse, 90s boy-band territory, especially the ones
with the silken backs. Use your vest to layer your
look with texture, and to break up your suits
monotony. For instance, if you are wearing a navy
jacket and trousers, try a heather gray vest in a cozy
flannel. Or if your suit is gray with tiny pinstripes,
try a herringbone one. Bold enough to step out in an
olive green suit? Try a solid vest in mustard or wine
for a look thats seasonally refreshing.

Whos wearing it?
