Transformer oil
It is a highly refined mineral oil that is stable at high

temperatures and has excellent electrical insulating

properties.
Derived from napthenic or paraffinic crudes
It acts as dielectric material / effective coolant

Kinematic viscosity(max. 27 cst @ 27 C)
Moisture Content(max. 50 ppm)
Dielectric Strength-

BDV minimum 30KV for 2.5mm gap (unused oil)

BDV minimum of 60 KV after filtration
Dissipation factor , tan(max. 0.002 at 90C)
Resistivity
min. 1500 10 ohm-cm at 27C
min. 35 10 ohm-cm at 90C
Acidity(max. 0.03 mg-KOH/gm)
Sludge formation in ageing test (max. 0.05% by weight)
in oxidation test (max. 0.10% by weight)

Degradation in Transformer oil

Soild particles like rust, dust and fiberous

Effect of moisture on BDV

The presence of even 0.01% water in transformer oil

reduces its electrical strength to 20% of the dry oil value.

Filters-removes contaminants in suspension

Centrifuges-solid as well as liquid contaminants can be

removed
Vacuum dehydrators-removes the dissolved gases and water
contents
Ionic Reaction Column(alumina,fuller's earth) for reducing
acidity
