John Lewis was

born in Troy,
Alabama

At the age of 23, he helped plan


the March on Washington and
was one of the keynote
speakers.

John received a B.A.


from American Baptist
Theological Seminary in
Nashville, Tennessee

John was named the


director of community
affairs for the National
Consumer Co-op Bank in
Atlanta.

He became nationally
known when Alabama
state troopers and other
police attacked him and
500 other protestors as
they attempted to cross
the Edmund Pettis Bridge
during the Selma to
Montgomery Voting Rights
March.

He is only the second African


American since reconstruction to
represent the state of Georgia in
congress and has been reelected
9 times.

John received an
additional B.A. from Fisk
University in Nashville,
Tennessee

He is married to
the former Lillian
Miles.
