Introduction

In 2002, Tata Motors acquired over 900 acres of land for its Nano car project, which was to
be launched in 2008. The State Govt, on the basis of an old rule, in the Land Acquisition Bill
of 1894, gave the land to Tata. But this rule was made for the public development projects
and not private businesses. This lead to protests by displaced farmers and land-rights people
who were forced to evacuate the fertile agricultural land. And the compensation that was
offered in return was inadequate. Even the housing facilities were delayed.
The state govt fenced off the land on December 1, 2006. Mamta Banerjee was denied entry in
Singur. Therefore she called for a state wide bandh and went on a 25 day hunger strike. Tata
initiated the construction of plant on December 21, 2007.
A lot of political unrest was caused by this controversy. The case was taken up to the
Supreme Court Of India.
"In hindsight, it was a prudent decision given the hostile circumstances in Singur. But that
move gave us a high negative cost," Tata Motors at an interaction organised by the Ladies
Study Group of Indian Chamber of Commerce. The controversy had adverse economic
impact and the government's industrialization policy was criticised.
