' ‘The Green Gravel Road

‘The air was dead’quite) there was no sound, no wind, complete silence. Then the sound of
church bells and piano music filled the air, Today was no ordinary day, today was Sean’s
wedding. Everybody sat in pews facing the groom, he was dressed in a plain black and white
suit. Sean stood in front of everyone, waiting for the bride to make her walk down the “isle”, “7,
which in this case was the lawn of the church, Sean loved the outdoors and insisted on an outside
ceremony. This has not been true for Sean though, he used to dislike the outdoors,

As Sean stood waiting for his fiancée, he started to look at the beautiful scenery around
him. He looked around and saw the beautiful green trees, flowers blooming, and the birds
soaring overhead. It was June 6f*, 2013, and Sean thought to himself, it is a perfeet day for a
‘wedding, Then he thought about the first time he saw such beautiful scenery. He did not
rememiber the first time he was outside, but he remembered when he was fifteen. It was a normal
summer day, but this was the first time he actually looked at the beauty around him. Sean
thought of the time he went for a run on that summer day.
Sean woke up like it was any other day. It was summer, and it was summer vacation for
Sean’s high school, He already finished his first two years of high school and he was about to
start his junior year, Even though it was summer, Sean never enjoyed sleeping in too late. HeLeNoir2
always believed that people should enjoy as much as they can in life. So, Sean woke up before
eight o’elock and right away he started planning out his day. It was the middle of June in
Pennsylvania, it could get very hot by mid-day. However, today was not super-hot, it was very
wwaim, but there was @ wonderful breeze in the wind, This, Sean thought to himself, isthe perfect
day for a run, He thought about running atound the neighborhood he lived in, but then he
remembered that there was a bike trail not far from his house. The Chester County Bike Trail
was about a mile away from Sean’s house and he rode his bike on that trail before. He always
wanted to run that trail and today was the best day to do so. That bike trail is not that long, Sean
thought, it takes less than an hour to bike, so I could run that.
Sean ate a light breakfast and an hour and a half later he started his pre-work out ritual
He was not the greatest of athletes, but he knew the basics, He remembered an article he read in
health class, It talked about running and the author, Christen Luff, wrote, “Before at your
workouts, make sure you warm up properly by walking for five to 10 minutes” (Luff). He
stretched, ran a lap around his neighborhood, and did some push-ups. After about (en or twenty
minutes of stretching, Sean told his brother that he was going on a run. Sean started his timer
right before he left his house and then he was off. Leaping over potholes and jumping over
fences, Sean was in a good mood and he was ready. However, he still had yet to start his journey.
utes of running through fields and roads, Sean approached a gray

gravel road that was covered in tall grass and overgrown weeds, This, technically, was not bike
trail, but this makeshift road led to the Chester County Bike Trail. As Sean ran down the messy
road, thorn bushes and weeds smacked at his legs and mud covered his shoes; this hardly
troubled Sean, he was focused, After a short minute, Sean was out of the thicket and on the
actual trail,LeNoir3
‘The trail itself was a mix of some gravel stretches of land and some that were made of
asphalt, The trail extended over and under tunnels, twisted every direction, and was
predominantly surrounded by trees and fields. ‘The trail was actually very beautiful and serene.
Sean never noticed how green the grass was, or how great the trees were, or how peaceful the
streams and small lakes were, As Sean ran he enjoyed all the views of nature he could find, Sean
knew this was going to be a long run, so he did his best to enjoy the nature and forget about the
adventure that laid ahead,
Since he started the trail, a minute passed, then two, then ten, At this point Sean felt he
was nearing the end of his run. The end of the trail was just a fence, there was construction being
done to extend the tail even further, However, at the end of every stretch of land, after every
turn, alter every tunnel, Sean did not see the fence. He still had a long way to go. It became
ifficult to enjoy the scenery and Sean just stared straight ahead to forget about how exhausted
he was. While he ran, Sean stared out into the distance, and the only thing he could see was the
gray gravel road and the green trees surrounding it, The colors of the trees and the shade they
produced mixed with the gray road, but everything just seemed like a green and gray blur, At this
point, Sean was past the point of tired, his legs were heavy and his asthma started to affeet his
chest. Sean just staredat the gray gravel road. It helped him forget everything; where he was or
what he was doing
Finally, afier a long time, Sean reached the fence, He immediately looked at his timer and
ssaw that it had been almost fifty minutes since he departed from his house. Sean had ran for fifly
minutes straight, but he felt victorious. He felt as though he won the Olympies. Sean danced in
circles and he finally looked back zt the fence, which read: Mile Marker 7.0. Sean bad just ran
‘over seven miles in fifty minutes, this made him feel even more triumphant, Then it dawned onLeNoir4
him, he was just half way through his journey, now he has to run back, This did not bother him at
the moment, he was on top of the world
Less than ten minutes on his pathway back to his house, tiredness overwhelmed Sean. His
legs were growing weary and he could barely push off the ground anymore. When his legs were
‘on the ground, they shook. His breath was short and weak. Sean did his best to forget about his
tiredness, but he could not, The only thing registering in his mind was; crap, am an idiot, and,
how the hell am I going to get home. Even though he was exhausted, Sean started to look out at
the scenery around him. No matter how tired he was, the grass was green, the trees were
beautiful, and the wind still elt nice on his sweaty body. Time started to fly by and the scenery
became a memory.
It felt like days in his mind and an etemity in his body, but an hour later, Sean was back
to the undergrowth of a road. He was still tired, but he was so close to finishing his adventure.
He neared his house and saw his brother cireling the neighborhood on his bike,
“Where the hell have you been, I was supposed to watch you!” Shouted Sean's brother.
“L went,” Sean started, gasping for air, “on a run.”

his mind. He thought about how
Sean walked like he was defeated, but there was pride i
great he was at running, about what an accomplishment running fourteen miles was, but mostly,
he thought about the scenery.LeNoir5

‘The Grey Run
The date was June 1, 2013, and he was getting married. Bryce Flores was getting married,
and he couldn't believe it, As the priest was talking about their virtues or something, Bryce was
thinking back to his life, He thought about yesterday. Just the other day he just ran a half a
‘marathon, but he didn’t know at the time. He found out it was an adventure of over 14 miles from
his parents some time later, He didn’t even know it, Bryce just went for a run as it was any other
day.
According to Thad MeLaurin,
Doing non-running but aerobic cross-training as well as light resistance training on your
offrunning days isa great way to optimize your running fitness. Cycling, swimming, using
the elliptical machine or row machine are all great forms of cross-training (McLaurin),
However, Bryce did not even think of this, he did not even know that he would run that much, Just
like any other day Bryce woke up and planned out his day. He completely ignored that tomorrow
was his wedding day, to him tomorrow was in the distant future. As he planned out his day, he
decided to go for a run later. It was the end of May, and the weather was very nice outside. There
was a bike trail not far from his house, and he always wanted to run that trail. He has seen many
other people running on that trail before, and he rode his bike there several times himself. It took

anywhere from thirty to forty minutes to bike from his house, to the end of the trail, and back, So
how long could it be?
Bryce did his usually warm up, ran around the neighborhood and stretched. He then told
his parents, who he lives with, and his brother that he was going on a run, Bryce put earbuds in his
cars, tured on music, started a timer, and started to nun, When he started, there was a lot of energy
in him, he was ready to run a 12K, He would jump over fences and leap over potholes, but he
wasn’t even at the trail yet. After a long minute, Bryce arrived at a grey and dark colored gravel
that was the trail, He started his adventure unaware of the path that lay ahead (you see what I did
there).

It has been awhile since Bryce has even-been on this trail, but he was ready to conquer it.
‘A minute passed, two, then ten. Bryce was thinking he was coming to the end of the trail, but as
he ran, he found he still had more to go. Bryce was determined and headstrong, he wasn’t going
to stop until he reached the endl, At the end of every turn, after every stretch of land, after every
tunnel, Bryce thought he was nearing the end, but no he wasn’t, After thirty minutes, Bryce just
learned to zone out and forget about the run, about his life, about reality. He would just stare down
at the grey gravel road. It was nothing but grey, and the beautiful scenery and green trees.
has been a long adventure, and Bryce has made it. He reached the fence that

marked the end of the bike trail. He look down at his stop watch and it read 49.6. It has almost
been an hour, but Bryce didn’t care he made it. Then, the surprising truth hit Bryce, he was only
half way done his journey, now he must run back. This didn’t bother Bryce right then though, he
finally reached the end. He was invincible at this point. Then, after running back home for twenty
minutes, Bryce felt defeated. He had to make it home, but he was so tired. His legs would shake
when they weren't in the air, and he could hardly push off the ground anymore. He didn’t careLeNoir3
though, Bryce just stared at the grey gravel road, He forgot who he was, where he was, or what he
was doing, He forgot all about his pain, he had to make it home, he had to make it home.
It has almost been two hours since Bryce started his journey and he was almost home, He
‘was no longer on the trail, but he was not home yet, It was then that Bryce saw his brother

“Oh,” exclaimed Bryce.
