Prologue.
Everything begins as a great team building

My name is Joanne Wee. Im studying at biotechnology UTM university in Malaysia. I participated in

We had plenty of activities with packed schedules through the program. Every session was fun and worth of
learning something. We spent such a fun time and had the chance to get to know one another as performing a
game of team building.

Teamwork games felt like an ordinary game, but each team made the idea; it was more unique and different
from before when I had done this game in my country. It showed that we approached the matter in different
way to communicate with people in other countries. It was creative and fun.

Experience the Culture was lots of fun night and made cultural
exchanges. It was the most enjoyable night of the entire program
because we watched a variety of interesting performances and I
realized how many talents they have got. I enjoyed my stay in Ubaya
Training Center in place which was beautiful and pleasant.

When we finally arrived at the EEPIS, we

took an oath of opening ceremony local
people. At this time, it was good to watch
the show again.

The Joint Student Workshop was very informative, I learned how to

suggest a creative method of design problems on products. The
presenters of Indonesian and Korean teams have already participated
in the competition before coming in Surabaya. We listened to a
lecture on the product design and it was very useful for me because I
have never learned.

17

Before going to our homestay, we went on tours at the design

studio. I was amazed at how wonderful the Creativity Station office
was. My impression about this project was really established and
perfectly organized here.

19

First, we took a Korean language class and

received own book to use it in study. I was
impressed again by we got the guidebook as an
unexpected present.

21

And then we checked in the Carica homestay, the accommodation was really clean and comfortable which
appreciated my pleasure. We had dinner at a stall on the side of the road; the structure was really different
from Malaysia. At night, we learned balloon art for a long time to make sure that can make the balloon art
mission within one minute. Tired as we were, we talked and laughed a lot.

Episode 1.
Charge on self creativity

1.

I think that the mission was fun way to get along with the local people. It was good to meet the local

1 .

people and children were excited by having the balloons. It made it easier for us to speak and ask to

their mothers about local issues in the village.

26

27

We played happily with the children and took pictures with them. Once we had enough data of local issues, we
came back to campus to decide what kind of issue we would select. We had a long discussion on this matter.

Product design taught me many things about technical aspects of consulting a product. I learned how to put a
theory into practice. I benefitted a lot from a different major. We budgeted for making purchases of the
necessary materials for the product.

.
.
.
30

31

The next activity was Team Mission Downtown. I really appreciated that the organizers gave us time not only
to solve local issues but also to have a good time with each other. Through this activity, we got to know quite
well and shared a joke. We took a picture in front of some monuments in interesting pose to complete our
mission.

. .
32

33

We had time to go shopping and we got product materials and local fruits for our free team mission. We bought
the seven kinds of fruits and tasted.

34

35

After that, we came back to campus and continued our work to make the product. We didnt have all materials
needed, some members of my team went to buy more materials and the others discussed product
measurement and made a decision. After members came back to buy materials, we were getting busier to make
products. So we had dinner in the work place.

37

Tonight, I was sad to attend the final Korean class. I

really enjoyed the class because our teacher was so nice
to us and taught us many words.

.
38

39

We had to rush back to our homestay by 10 p.m. due to the curfew, since we still have made our product. The
day after, we continually made our product for the entire day. Several problems came up which we have not
yet solved it before the final check.

41

On the final day, we had a closing reception. It was a bitter sweet night. All participants were excited to wait
for the announcement of choosing the best team. When Kimchi was chosen as the best team, everyone was
singing a song of celebration. I really like this culture of congratulations to the winner. It was awesome.

42

43

We had a lot of fun together singing, dancing

and chatting but we couldn't believe that this
was my last day here. I enjoyed that present
moment

of

taking

many

pictures

while

swallowing feelings of sadness.

45

Finally, it was time to say goodbye. We sent Korean teams early the next morning. I thought that this

program was great in diverse ways. We made new friends to make our life more fulfilling.

. .

We experienced in the cultural exchange and spoke to each other in different languages. When

, . ,

sometimes disagreement was subjected to each other, we didn't argue with others. It's hard to describe
how meaningful this program for me, nobody would know until anyone gives it a try.

Episode 2.
Find the local issues

2.

On 4 days, we went to see people and children in TMB town. We were taught that balloon art so that we could
communicate with the children and their parents. It was the best way to begin a conversation. It was easier to
talk to the local people to manage the RT03 town when we approached the children with balloons and pencils
provided by the organizers.

54

55

After handing out the balloons, we spoke to the local people and asked them the problem the village is facing
with. Few local men replied that there were no problems in the village. It was a little difficult for us to identify
solving problems. We felt a little sad when they didn't seem to be a problem the scattered rubbish on the
ground. One of our managers said that if there were problems, then nobody recognized it which becomes a
current matter.

.
56

57

However, we were seeking out people who can share some local issues with us. There were some problems

, .

such as so many mosquitoes and clothes are still wet during the rainy season. One of the family mentioned

that they have financial problems.

58

59

We met one who spoke with us about some local issues for a long time. She said that it will be happy if
underground water can clean enough for using for showering and washing clothes. When they use to wash
clothes, it is smelly and turns it yellow. Another issue, some of the women makes handicrafts of recycled trash.
They have no choice to cut trash over and over again if they hurt their finger. They wish there was a better way
to cut the trash, so everyone can prevent their finger.

. .

.
.
60

61

Final issue, the local people carry the river water to plants by manually. If there are channels from river

, .

water to the field, it would make things easier for them. After conversations with them we found out local

issues exactly.

. .

62

63

We went back to campus and started our discussion after finding out the problems. We used the table in the
guide book as guidance on which issue to select and solve. It was a very useful. We decided the problem
solving subject 'drying the laundry during rainy season' as the main criteria. However, we changed the second
highest grades subject to avoid a duplication. We choose the top priority project that it may cause finger pain if
it cut trash repeatedly to make into handicraft.

65

Episode 3.
Change the point of view to solve the problem

3.

We brainstormed the process Deriving a New Idea after choosing an

issue to solve. We presented several ideas of a product design to resolve
the problem. We used format for selection of idea and picked the most
appropriate product solution. The meeting has been put off for a long
time due to pick up the best choice.

,
.
.

.
.
68

69

In the end, we have decided the most suitable product of modified recycled trash cutter which was inspired by
the pizza cutter. It would have a round knife with safety wheels on both sides and it will prevent finger pain
and lower the pressure while cutting. On the 5th day, we made a blueprint in the laboratory. It is as in the
following.

.
. 5 ,
.
70

71

Based on our product design, we listed out the necessary materials and check the quantity. We also estimated
the market price of our materials and rough budget. Then two members of our team went to purchase
materials by the offering bus. They didn't get what they wanted, so we had to search for the materials on our
own.

, .
.
, . ,
.
72

73

On the 6th day, we had Team Mission Downtown. We spent the day purchasing more materials for our product.
That night, we discussed on the work responsibility and assigned a different task to each other so that we
would be able to complete our product on time for the final check. We made a timetable for making our product.

6 , . ,
. ,
.
74

75

On the 7th day, we spent the whole day making our product. My part of work was to cut the sponge and made
the pieces of aluminum as smooth as possible. Other members were in charge of drilling, cutting, sharpening
the knife and so on. We done many things at once, but we made not only few mistakes, but the sponge with
the wheel was too thick, it was unable to cut the trash. This took us a lot of time, because we reduced the
thickness of the sponge and also sharpening the knife. My team member, Seon-hye and I made product
descriptions to explain to the judges.

7, . ,
. .
, .
. .
.
76

77

Unfortunately, our team was still not able to reduce the sponge thickness of the wheels and edge the knife
sharp enough during the final check. Therefore, we haven't really prepared for presentation. We continued to
work on it till the next day. It succeeded to cut plastic before the exhibition. We promoted our product during
the exhibition.

,
. .

.

78

79

80

And then we went to the village to get the signature of the person who wants our user. We were happy

that she was willing to accept our proposal. Later that evening, we delivered ours for her and explained

how to use this. She was happy to get our trash cutter.

. .

81

The great strength of product is that it has a good concept. We made the safety wheel same as knife's diameter
to prevent somebody being hurt when not in use. The wheels made of acrylic and sponge so that the sponge
will be compressed and revealed the knife during cutting.

.
.
.
82

83

However, the weakness is that round knives are hard to get in the market. It's hard to put an edge on a knife,
so we need a knife grinder. Furthermore, if we make electric cutting machine by driving motor on the market, it
can improve the cutting quality.

84

85

Epilogue

There is nothing negative to comment on about the program except it perfectly organizes. Almost everything
surpassed beyond my expectations. I really loved the accommodation both Ubaya training center and Carica
homestay. I appreciated to give great pleasures and the warm hospitality of Indonesian and Korean friends. I
hope this will continue for a long time to help aid between the students and the local communities.
