MIRACULOUS OBJECTS OF EARLY BYZANTINE ART

This paper will explore the relation between early Byzantine art and its role in mediating between celestial power and man. Demand for holy souvenirs, especially was developed in the early Byzantine period of pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Pilgrims believed in the
possibility of transferring the sanctity of holy people, holy relics and many others through
physical contact. Thus, there is numerous mixture of pagan and Christian iconography in the
individual case. The emphasis of this work is on the Greco-Egyptian armband form the Holy
Land (Fouquet Collection) which has found in Egypt (6-7. century). The relationship of the
pagan (magic) and Christian elements, within the eight medallions of armband is analyzed.
