Class: SED 322

Subject: Pop Culture in Education

Hierarchical Practice
o The teacher controls knowledge and gives it to students (willing or
not).
Dialogic Practice
o Like class discussions and interpretive activities were there is no
"right" answer.
o Knowledge is built upon by both teacher and students.
Praxical Pedagogy
o "developing agency among students"
o Pros: discuss important topics, students learn relevant info their lives,
then they make a change to the community
o Cons: assumes students already don't know things and aren't already
agents of change

Adding pop culture to lessons can make them both more engaging and easier
to understand
o Students are interested in popular culture and can often relate to it
naturally, so using it in teaching will allow them to activate their prior
knowledge
While useful, observations of pop culture should not be left at the surface
level
o Simply mentioning Kim Kardashian isnt enough to be useful. You
have to delve into why shes successful, what she does right, what she
does wrong, her motivations, etc.
o Getting students to think critically about the causes and effects of
things in pop culture can develop their critical thinking skills in
general
