ERNEST ADU YIRENKYI

STIMULATION 2: POSITION PAPER FOR THE PEOPLE OF REPUBLIC OF GHANA

HUMANITARIAN
We the good people of Ghana for the past years, we have been providing humanitarian to our neighboring
countries and other countries in the world. For record sake, Ghana as a member of UN has provided
humanitarian aid in different forms to countries like Liberia, Haiti, Kenya, Yemen, Malawi etc. We
provided humanitarian to these countries in the form of food assistance, blankets, mattresses, mosquito
nets, towels and cash. Also we allowed refugees into our country. Ghana supported Haiti during their
crises. We sent cash amounting to US$3million as a donation to the victims (Harsach, 2010). Ghana also
provided humanitarian aid to Liberia by providing refugees camp in Accra called Buduburam. United
Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in its 2009 Global Report estimated that 11,100
refugees were still in the camp. Though Ghana is said to be developing nation, we pledge to provide our
support to any country.
As a democratic country committed to the promotion of human rights, Ghana strongly believes that
humanitarian assistance is more than necessary to restore dignity in the lives of the internally displaced
persons who have little to eat and a place to call home. Since there is no job opportunity nor any viable
income source for these people to depend on, aid is the only foreseeable remedy to bring hope into the
lives of these people. However, this aid should be properly allocated, because food and other aids in the
wrong hands could still be a tool for inciting violence and further mistreatment.
With current issue regarding Syria crises, the people of Ghana have decided to provide humanitarian
aid to the victims. Ghana is providing food assistance, cloths, blankets, etc. to Syria refugees. We are
doing our best to reach anyone who is in need regardless of location. Ghana is also collaborating with
Non-governmental agencies to mobilize fund to supply medical aid to these people. Due to the wide
geographical distance between Ghana and Syria and our inexperience in delivering direct humanitarian
aid as a country, our support is tailored towards helping credible bodies like the Red Cross Society to
better extend assistance to the affected Syrians. Donating money to Syria directly is not an option we are
considering due to the breakdown of law and order and our fear that financial donations to the people of
Syria could end up funding government brutalities.

DRAFT RESOLUTION:
Expecting: the good people of Ghana is expecting good results from this humanitarian aid given to Syria
refugees.
Reaffirming: we also reaffirmed that anytime they need our support, we ever ready to provide our best to
help.
Deeply Concerned: we the good people of Ghana are deeply concerned about the situation in Syria, its
our prayer that very soon peace will prevail.
