Literary Devices
You have learned that literary devices reveal an authors writing
style and make the writing come alive. Another type of literary
device is imagerydescriptive words and phrases that appeal to
the senses. Imagery helps readers imagine how things look, sound,
smell, taste, and feel. Read the sentences below.
Imagery helps set the tone and create a mood. The tone is the
authors attitude about the subject. The mood is the overall
feeling that the authors word choice and use of
imagery create.
Imagery
Tip
To find imagery in a text, look for words that
describe. To find the mood and tone of a text, look
for words that express a feeling or attitude.

Read the paragraph below. Then look at the chart. The first
column identifies one example of imagery from the paragraph.
The second column shows how specific words and phrases help
create a mood and set the tone.
When Howard Carter first
peered through the door
of Tutankhamens tomb, he
glimpsed an unimaginable
treasure. The room he saw was
filled with exquisitely painted
furniture, elaborately carved
boxes, and sculptures. The
overwhelming glint of gold
sparkled from every corner of
the room. What an amazing find
he had unearthed!
Imagery
Exquisitely painted is a
description that helps readers
picture how the furniture looked.
Try This
Find one more example of imagery in the paragraph and tell
which sense it appeals to. Then identify all the words and
phrases that create a mood of excitement and awe.

Word Scribe
This week, your job is to use the Vocabulary
Words in writing. In your vocabulary journal,
write sentences that use the Vocabulary
Words in meaningful ways. For example, you could write
about an object you wish could be immortalized for your
descendants to see. Use as many Vocabulary Words as you
can. Share your sentences with your classmates.

Comparing Texts
1. Which fact about ancient Egyptian monuments is the most
interesting or amazing to you? Explain.
2. Compare and contrast the text features in The Egyptian
News and Secrets of the Sphinx.
3. In ancient Egypt, only scribes knew how to read and write.
If the same were true in our world today, what would be the
effects on society?

Fluency Practice
Par tner Reading
Work with a partner. Each of you should
choose one long paragraph from Secrets of
the Sphinx. As your partner reads the text
aloud, listen carefully for the pauses between
the phrases. Give your partner feedback on
phrasing. Then read the paragraph you chose,
making your phrasing sound natural. Trade
paragraphs with your partner. Take
turns reading the paragraphs
aloud and giving each
other feedback about
phrasing.
